Means you need your EAD or your GC to work.

My Advice is usually based on "Worst Case Scenario" and what is written in the rules/laws/instructions. That is the way I roll... -Protect your Status - file before your I-94 expires.

WARNING: Phrases in this post may sound meaner than they were intended to be. Read the Adjudicator's Field Manual from USCIS

Yeah, you need your EAD to work. But you can still use your SSN card to open up bank accounts and apply for driver's license, etc. Once you get married and get your EAD, go back to SSN office and renew your SSN. You'll no longer have Work Only with DHS Authorization on the card.

SSN by itself is NOT authorization to work...

YMMV

actually most DMV's now require SSN and an additional document proving legal presence in the USA of up to one year or more. The OP does not have this yet, as the I-94 is only good for 90 days.

YMMV

You need an EAD or Green Card. Get married, apply for AOS in your married name (if you want) and AFTER you receive your green card, go back and change the name on the SS card, if you want. If you don't want, don't worry about it. The important thing is the number and that never changes.

You can apply once you have the actual EAD card, but you will not be assigned an SSN until SSA can verify you as having work authorization. If you are lucky they will be able to do it while you are in the office. Otherwise, you could be waiting weeks or even months before you are assigned an SSN.
