My wife received her "Request for Applicant to Appear for Initial Interview" the other day. The interview date is July 20th in Newark, NJ. They received our application on 19 Feb 2009. We never received any RFEs. I spent a lot of time making the sure the application was bulletproof but I've heard that RFEs are almost unavoidable.

So my first question is, because the interview is already scheduled does that mean that we are past the point where an RFE would be possible? I'm assuming that we've passed the paper-based review and are now on to the face-to-face part.

My second question is one of semantics. When they refer to this as our 'initial' interview, does that mean there will be others?

Thanks for your thoughts.

There have been cases of RFEs at the interview. You can get one anytime.

If there are no problems, it wil be your only interview. Usually, there is only one.

They use the word "INITIAL" interview for legal purposes. If they are not satisfied, they can schedule follow-up interviews also known as a Stokes interview. With the interview letter in hand, you wont get another RFE until the interview. During the interview if there is something required by the IO, which you do not have handy, you will get a RFE. But I think that only holds up the decision. Getting an RFE before the interview, holds up the entire Process. I would rather have the later than the former.

Congrats on the interview and the speedy process. It pays to check and double check and be prepared. Good job. :)

They can still ask for further evidence at interview. And yes, all the letters say "initial" interview, but hopefully it will be your only one. I'm sure you will prepare as well for the interview as you did for the initial paperwork. :D
