May 29 (Bloomberg) -- Confidence among U.S. consumers rose this month to the highest level since September, reinforcing signs that the worst recession in half a century is abating.

The Reuters/University of Michigan final index of consumer sentiment increased to 68.7, more than forecast, from 65.1 in April. The preliminary reading for May was 67.9.

Hey A.J, house prices in Sydney just went up. The median is about $412K US now.

PS Say hi to your cousin for me will ya.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I'll believe it when they actually start shopping.

I was at the Crossings over Memorial Day weekend... they were shopping. Lot was full, very long lines at registers.

The retail numbers are pretty bad, still.

Agreed. But it was still good to see all those people shopping. The only thing that gave me pause was the sheer number of New York license plates in the parking lot. I don't want the goddamn swine flu.
