I wonder if Malaysia does this as well. It seems unlikely that anyone would go to the interview without the police certificate since you have to send in a checklist stating that you already have the certificate before you even get an interview date scheduled.

I wonder too. But all in all, best to have it before the interview!

How is your HUSBAND enjoying the US? ;)

Hi there! He is doing great, although I am a bit annoyed he is being so slow to get his driver's permit! Life is good though--he even got to see the President already! Obama came to my small town of 4,000 people for a town hall meeting. What an exciting day for a new American resident (and an old one!)

You're from Minnesota right? Which town do you live in if you don't mind me asking. I'm in northern Minnesotan town which is a little bigger and the President passed us by.

Hi All,

I've just got my welcome notice after immigrating on an initial F2B category which was converted to an F1.

You can DM me if you have any questions on the process. It's actually pretty straight forward but just takes a lot of time.

For those of you who're attending the interview soon, fret not......it's not rocket science. Just answer truthfully and you'll soon be on your way!

@nirajz

Interview Notice: Mar 2011

Medical: Mar 2011

Interview: Apr 14 2011

Collected Immigrant Visa: Apr 15, 2011

PoE: Chicago on Aug 26, 2011

Welcome Notice: Sep 19, 2011

GC / SSN / DL: Still in Anticipation

I got my GC based on an F2B which later converted to an F2A. It took close to 10yrs during which I tried applying for the DV unsuccessfully. My GF who is a first time applicant got selected for DV2015! We're keeping our fingers crossed.

hey guys,

if you go to putra jaya for a certified english birth certificate (JPN department), it only costs you RM10. It is already a certified translated copy.

Don't need to translate anymore.....An easier way which worked for me, was to get a new format Birth cert from any JPN office. There's one opposite the HSBC bank in PJ State. It only takes 10 mins to get it after showing your IC and paying RM5 to request for an extract. Don't be fleeced by those ppl demanding hundreds just to translate a simple document. I saved a lot of $$$ this way and I can use it for life. Don't need to translate & pay money to certify everytime I need a new certified copy.

Hi everyone! So glad to have found this thread.

My boyfriend and i are planning to get married next June. He is coming to visit me next month to meet my parents and to discuss about the wedding plans. The plan is get engaged in Dec, married/have our solemnisation/akad nikah in June, he flies back in July, i move to the States in Sept. Spmewhere along that timeline we would like to start applying an immigration visa for me.

My questions would be:

- would ut be better for us to apply for a fiance or spouse visa? I'm a primary school teacher and i teach Year Six so i wouldnt want to leave my kids stranded before the exams which is in September. We plan on having me move to the US after the UPSR exams, which is mid Sept.

- should i start applying for the documents (letter of good conduct) first before we apply for my visa? I studied in Australia before so it would take time to get that from the Australian Police, id imagine.

- if we get married here in Malaysia then i go to the US on my tourist visa (valid til 2018,woohoo), can we just do adjustment of status instead of applying for a spouse visa and wait in Malaysia?

Seeing that we've been in a long distance relationship since April 2007, we wpuld like to use the best and shortest route so we can be together sooner. Hope you guys can help and thank you so much for sharing your experience!

Hey there, welcome to VJ.

Firstly, if you want to marry in Malaysia (as indicated by your plan for him to return to the US in July 2012), you can only apply for a CR1 visa. The K1 visa is not applicable already as you would be spouses by that time.

Secondly, yes, I would think that getting the Australian letter of good conduct ASAP is a good idea. The Malaysian one can be requested for right after you get NOA1 (but I'm talking based on the K1 visa process here, not for the CR1 -- not sure when would the right time be if you were to go for the CR1).

Thirdly, I highly doubt that it is legal to marry here in Malaysia and move to the US on a B1/B2 visa. In fact, at the POE, if you were travelling with your husband, the CBP officer will most probably deny you entry because you do not have strong ties to Malaysia as you are already married to an American by then. Please do not commit immigration fraud by doing this.

Lastly, it is impossible to say when you will get your visa (either CR1 or K1). I understand about not wanting to leave before the UPSR exams (that is actually very noble of you), but no one can guarantee you when you will get your visa. It takes longer to get the CR1 visa, but it is better in the sense that it is cheaper and when you get to the US you will have your greencard already; it takes shorter for the K1 visa but it is more expensive and you will need to do AOS before getting your two-year conditional greencard.

I sense from your post that you really want to get married in Malaysia. Like I said earlier, if so, you would need to go for the CR1 visa. If you apply for the CR1 visa right after your wedding (i.e. June 2012), you would most probably be in the US only in February 2013 or March 2013. Please check the CR1 timelines at the top of the VJ page. Please allow me to emphasize that it is not a good idea whatsoever to marry here in Malaysia and fly with your husband to the US on your B1/B2 visa, because you most probably will not be allowed entry.

Here's another suggestion that I personally do not like or recommend but it has been done before: go to the US on your B1/B2 visa as girlfriend to your boyfriend, marry in the US, and do your AOS there. But this, of course, would mean that you marry in the US not in Malaysia, and you cannot return to Malaysia until after you have your Advanced Parole or greencard in hand.

I wish you both all the best.

Thank you MalaysiannGirl for your reply!

We do not intend to commit immigration fraud, let me just put that out there. I asked becausee it is an option but idoubt my bf will agree. He is with the military so he's iffy abt stuff like that.

We would like to get married in Malaysia becausee i hv a large family and two of my brothers live overseas. It would be cheaper for them to fly home for summer break and hvg my bf come durg that time than hvg everyone fly to the us for the wedding. Also that would mean visas for everyone (there are 13 ppl in my immediate family alone!) which is going to be very expensive for all of us!

It is also important to hv my father Perform the akad as he had done so for my two sisters. A bit of a sentimental i am, and it probably sounds silly but id like to hv a proper wedding w family and close friends. My bf is okk with hvg our wedding here so i think we'd go with that plan.

Does it take long to get a cr1 visa? An acquaintance of mine got marrried in june 2010 and she still hasnt gotten her visa so im very concerned abt the timeline if we get a cr1.

Also if i go to th States after we are married and stay for six months thenn leave for England and come back after a few months, will that be ok?

My bf is probably moving bases in September which is why i want tp be there ten so he won't have to do it alone. I also wouldnt want to leave my students ( it wont be fair to them!) so after mmid sept is the best for us.

Hey, i just thought abt this. If we are married and im on a b2 can i still visit and stay with him and go back before theexpiry date? If i move i will do it alone beecause he cant come due to work etc.

Thhank you for your hhelp and sorry for the essay. :)
