It sounds like a tongue-in-cheek commentary to me.

I agree. The way he phrased the article makes it seem to me like he is not being serious. For example, he mentions that his 'servant' has a college degree....why mention that if he's being serious? But I don't know, I have no idea who the guy is so I don't know his history.

If he is serious, that's unbelievable.

It is a sad reality that, in spite of the college (and some even post-graduate) studies, Filipinos cannot find enough employment opportunities in the Philippines that would allow a good quality of life. This "brain drain" has been a long-standing issue as a lot of the educated are leaving the country.

Yep. Their greatest resource is their people. I don't think you can go into a hospital just about anywhere in the world today and not find at least one nurse from the PI.

The reason: there are more than 130,000 Filipina maids working as $3,580-a-month cheap labor in Hong Kong.

That number ($3580) is unrealistic.....I have been there and call BS on that salary.

this is HK dollars. not the same as American dollars. check the exchange rate.

HK dollars not US - sounds about right.

Practically all middle class people in HK have a maid and most people will children have a live-in nanny- usually from PI, sometimes from the mainland, Thailand or Nepal. Many people treat them like ######.

I'd expect that those people who say they are from Thailand are actually from Cambodia. Lots of rich people take in slaves workers from Cambodia into Thailand. Then, they would trade them off to China.

I'm sadden by this very much. I wish I can do something to reduce trafficking in Cambodia.

That makes more sense. I keyed in on the $ sign.

So flips sound like China's Mexicans.

I have heard some people say Philippines is like Mexico without the Islands.

They do have a lot in common, I assume since they are both Spanish Colonies.

But in PI you tend to have a lot more educated people.

Education in the Philippines is mostly Westernized, based on the American education system. In 2003, the Philippines had an average literacy rate of 93.4%[84][85] and about equal for males, and females.

In 2004, the literacy rate was at 97%[172] for youth under the age of 14 and 91% for people over 15,[173] placing Mexico at the 24th place in the world rank accordingly to UNESCO.[174]

Looks fairly close to me.

Brother, let me put it this way. I have worked in higher education for about 16 years. Not once have I met a professor of anything that was from the PI -- and I have indeed met many Mexicans in all areas of this "biz"

That's what I meant.

I don't know why that happens, but it does. I know an engineer form the Philippines that washes and delivers cars for Enterprise. My wife has a business degree and a law degree, but she works retail. That story is repeated over and over. The Filipinos have a hard time translating their education and experience from the Philippines to work here in the US, except for the nursing industry, where they seem to thrive.
