The right-wing fear-mongering against Sonia Sotomayor just keeps getting more and more comical. The latest grievance is her membership in the National Council of La Raza, a large national organization that bills itself as "the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States."

Former Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO), who spent his career in Congress calling for a moratorium on immigration, appeared on CNN to lambaste Sotomayor for belonging to a group whose name would translate as "The Race," made the false claim that La Raza has the motto "For the race everything, outside the race nothing," and bashed it as being "a Latino KKK without the hoods or the nooses."

The KKK without the hoods or the nooses? Um, those hoods and nooses do make a really important difference!

By the way, a literal translation is "The Race" (according to their Web site, other possibilities include "the people" and "the community") and in the full linguistic context it refers essentially to advancing the civil rights and economic opportunities of Latinos. As a comparison, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People does not propose to oppress non-blacks, and the American Jewish Committee doesn't aim to keep the Gentiles down.

Another group called Americans for Legal Immigration PAC (ALIPAC) has its own strong statement, accusing her of belonging to "a racist organization called 'The Race.'" Said ALIPAC president William Gheen: "The US Supreme Court is no place for brown or Hispanic supremacists like Sonia Sotomayor."

M.E.Ch.A. (Spanish: Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán, "Chicano Student Movement of Aztlán") is a student organization that seeks to promote Chicano unity and empowerment through education and political action.

...

A passage from MEChA's national website reads: ‘As Chicanas and Chicanos of Aztlán, we are a nationalist movement of Indigenous Gente that lay claim to the land that is ours by birthright. As a nationalist movement we seek to free our people from the exploitation of an oppressive society that occupies our land. Thus, the principle of nationalism serves to preserve the cultural traditions of La Familia de La Raza and promotes our identity as a Chicana/Chicano Gente.

...

Also controversial is the phrase "Por La Raza todo, Fuera de La Raza nada", which translates "For the Race, everything, outside the Race, nothing". Many critics of MEChA see this statement as ethnocentric and racist. This phrase appears in El Plan Espiritual de Aztlán and is often claimed to be the "slogan" of MEChA, despite little attestation of its use by MEChA members or alleged importance within MEChA.

The right-wing fear-mongering against Sonia Sotomayor just keeps getting more and more comical.

They're way behind the left if you count Senate votes on previous nominees. I think Roberts only got 4 out of 44 votes from the Democrats and he was considered very qualified not a racist by any means.

The Democrats could get Jack on Ripper on the bench. They got the votes and the rest is hopeless for now.

Actually, with Norm Coleman dragging his feet on his defeat, they don't have the votes and will have to sway a few moderate republicans.

Wow, they have to win one GOP vote if Franken isn't seated. That's not much of hurdle.

In reality, Reid only commands about 35-40 votes, depending on the issue. The rest of the votes have to be bought or traded. Some senior democrats have become quite beligerant and it's just easier to court a couple of moderate republicans.

Yep. The Blue Dog Democrats are a class all by themselves.

The speaker of both houses just don't have the clout that previous ones did. Part of it is because the party itself is quite divided, and also because of the 24 hour news cycle. People just can't get away with things they used to. Just ask Tom Delay

If you belong to a civil rights group that advocate for civil rights (unlike the KKK) you are deemed to be labeled as the KKK clan.

Through the eyes of racist like Tancredo, they are one in the same.

I had look it up but the last Democrat president forced to withdraw his nominee was LBJ on Justice Fortas to become Chief Justice. That's highly unlikely now unless they dig some real dirt on her.
