nice try, but let's try reading comprehension 101...please see bolded area for reference:

but Americans in general are not told the truth.

I was there last for 3 weeks. I saw no news reports about Iraqi, I got back to England and the first news broadcast I saw was; explosion in Iraq, soldiers killed civilians killed. It happens every day. The truth is out there yes, but does every American go searching the web for truth. No!! They watch the news broadcasts and believe they are told the truth. they are told insubstantial snippets so as not to spoil the good feelings of the nation.

America help other countries... yes true but if you look at the stats the percentage help is mimimal. Sorry but you'll have to find the evidence ones self... the Truth really is out there.

Hey, I'm glad you started this debate, it's pretty wild. As for "truth" first it has to be defined as truth. The media always spins according to the slant of the ownership of the company responsible for the broadcast.

Your original statement "Americans in general are not told the truth" is very broad. Can you point me in the right direction to find the truth? What news do you watch, BBC? I'm sure they also have a political slant. Which news show is the most truthful, can you give me a list, I'm serious here, I'd like to see a ranking.

My point is to find the truth you first have to have the urge to dig for it in addition to having the sense of judgement and intelligence to balance information from multiple sources. You may be right that many people on our planet or in America don't know the "truth" but being motivated to find it and question it is a whole other issue. Complacency is not just an American issue, I'm sure Britain and many other nations have populations that don't know the "truth" and don't actively search for it. Personally, I love to digest info from many different sources on world, national and local news. But I still can't picture the "general" American in my mind because in my opinion there is no "general" American.

If ya need any more help, giz a shout

Since Godsavethequeen is apparantly indisposed for now, I'll give a stab at that.

Back in community college (yes, you can actually learn something at one), all freshman were required to take a course called, Critical Reading. I grudgingly signed up for the class to get it out the way, however, I found it to have been one of my most influential classes. It focused on showing methods of critical thinking vs. passive. It emphasised that when anyone does a meaningful research paper, they find many sources for their information.

That is the crux to at least moving closer to the truth. So, even as ordinary citizens, we have a duty - a responsibility NOT to just take the word from one source. The problem with that, however, is that we now have huge media conglomerates where only a handful of people such as Rupert Murdoch control the flow of information. Why that doesn't scare and outrage Americans in to doing something about it, I have no idea, but one of the saving graces has been the internet. But even the internet and it's independent news sources is a double-edged sword because any Joe Schmoe can publish something for the whole world to read. And even the slick minded ones will set up many different websites publishing the same bunk so that when people Google search, they assume they are looking at several different, independent sources.

So you listen with skepticism to whatever someone tells you, but consider the source and then go and find other sources that support, contradict and offer a different view. Then you add critical thinking (just think, "I am not a sheep"), and you've arrived at some reasonable notion of a truth.

Hey, thanks, and yeah, some of my best classes were at community college. My intention was not to stir up anything at all, I was basically just making a point similar to yours. To find the truth about anything you have to consider all of the sources and think critically.

This thing is really getting out of hand, some people are taking this too aggressively.

I just want to add that nobody gives you the truth. People persuade us with facts, ideas, concepts but it requires us to actively process in our minds that information to arrive at our own understanding of truth. Spoon feeding is for infants.

I'm still here and I'm willing to discuss anything. If I realized that there were people here that get off on seeing people get upset I would have never commented. I stand by my earlier statements and if you want to analyze them go ahead.
