Hi all,

I've been reading posts here and havent found anything that talks about a good card to use in calling the Phils...one thread mentioned the rechargeable card called LAYA, and i wanted to know how to set that up. I also wonder if there are other recommendations from all of you in the know. I live in Podunk, Ohio and I have yet to find a card that has decent minutes and a clear connection. Sometimes texting and chat just dont cut it for talking to the folks back home. Thanks so much for your replies! :star:

have you tried using skype? it's actually free, you just need a good internet connection and a webcam for your family in the Phils., acceptable desktop would cost approximately 20-30k for brandnew( 2nd hand around 5k),webcam 500-3k, and internet connection 1k a month

I do use LAYA, the same card that my husband has been using to call me when I was still in the Philippines so basically we have been using the same card, same PIN for almost 4 years now. I have no problems with it. I call my parents every other weekend and my $50.00 recharge would last me for 3 months.

LAYA can be found in www.callingcars.com. Open and account with them and go from there.

Removal of Conditions :

August 16, 2010 - Petition received by USCIS Vermont Center

August 20, 2010 - NOA1 received

October 4, 2010 - Biometrics

January 3, 2011 - Permanent 10 yr. Green Card Received.

Hi,

I knew a telephone company in the philippines they called it OWTEL(one world telecom). One of my friends in friendster from cebu but now here in CA gave my number to them and they called me and told me about their services, accdg to my friend and accdg to them its affordable but i never tried it yet coz im in an international contract plan with verizon wireless which is 0.21 cents/min(dollar).OWTEL has the same rate with verizon, free membership and you will have your own account executive in their company.

If you want i can give your number to them just pm me,just only if you want.

Goodluck... :)

I believe its 7 to 8 cents per minute . Calling the Philippines from here is more expensive than calling other countries. Anyhow, my $50 recharge lasts me a maximum of three months because I usually time my call to 30 minutes.

Rebtel is also good... They have decent rates -- .11 for landline, .13 for mobile phones. I have been using it for a year now and so far I have not experienced any glitch. Never had any luck with call cards... most of the time, a $5 card will only give you a 10-minute decent connection and then you'll get disconnected. If you will try to call again using the same card, it will tell you that you don't have sufficient funds on it. So there goes your balance down the drain.

I had this experience with more well known companies like AT&T calling cards, a $10. card gives you 16 min to RP. But I use a bright yellow card called RED sold in gas stations across Houston for $5. I get 37 min from my cell to her cell in RP. Never had connection or disconnection issues and the quality is good.

I was using Startec, but they have a nasty habit of cutting me off at a certain dollar amount so if I am traveling and need the connection it is not there, and if there are ever any issues with your account they will cut you off and then next month they call you to tell you why they cut you off. They don't read or respond to emails, so I quit using them.

Well I set up my LAYA account last night and just tried using it a few minutes ago. Couldnt keep the connection going to my sister's cell, called my mom on her cell and got disconnected after 3 mins. Maybe it works better with landlines. Thanks for the tip anyway, it will be my emergency calling account.

So what's this Rebtel and how does it work? I would appreciate the info, thanks much!

Anyhow for landline to landline calls there's International OnePrice with Time Warner. Ibelieve it's 1000mins/mo to the Phils for $19.95...sounds good, but no one in my family has a landline anymore

Btw, has anyone heard of Magicjack?

Is that a phonecard or like skype?

I am using nobelcom phone card. It's 9 cents per minute, everytime you purchase or recharge your account you'll be earning points and you can use it in reloading your card in the future
