Anyone have thoughts?

I mean in Grade 6 I was pulled from sex ed by my parents.. I went outside to play on the playground while everyone else learned about the birds and the bees. My parents would have done this for religious reasons. Is that not still the case/allowed? Why the need for a law I wonders?

One would think it would still be allowed, I don't know what has happened to change that or why there is a need for the law...hmm.

I remember my grade 2 teacher talked about how babies were made in class, and I came home and asked my Mom if it was true that "Mommy and Daddy had sex" so I could be born. I think she was shocked, she thought it was way too young and may have complained even to the school. But she was all for sex ed, just at the right age. She talked to me all about the birds and bees, sometimes too much detail  Like you don't want to talk to your parents about that!

 Jill.. that's great..

My birds & the bees talk went like this.. My father awkwardly came into my room and said.. "um... need to talk to you about something", and I guessing from his reaction to the topic said "don't worry Daddy, I already know".. and he said "pheuph.. good thing then" and walked out of the room..

the part he didn't know was everything I learned about the birds & bees was at the back of the school bus.. NOT the best place to learn that kind of info!

Well, I have an 8 year old sister and my mom was telling me that sex ed now is pretty crazy in Alberta, definitely not like it was when I was in school. Apparently they're teaching about masturbation, a whole 'how-to' to 8 year olds. And this is in a Catholic school. This of course rankles with my mother as it's a huge "sin" according to her, but she says that's just the tip of the iceberg, as they're also teaching how the mechanics of gay sex works.

I have to say that I'm not a prude by any means, nor do I have religious beliefs that make me think this is wrong. For me, I just think that 8 years old is WAY too young to go into detail like that. I think that the biological fundamentals should be taught but that's about it. It's the parent's job to really teach about sex. That being said, if you have parents who are prudes and pretty much think sex is wrong, you get no education at all! Who knows what the answer is.

My mom has taken my sister out of sex ed to her detriment. She has a lot of extra work during that period, she can't go and play, and she is teased relentlessly by other children. It's sad really.

Are parents allowed to pull their children from class when the topic of evolution comes up?

I imagine practically speaking that would be impossible.. it runs through most of the science text book, so the student wouldn't be able to sit at all in a science class without exposure to it and science is a required element in most schools right?

In Catholic schools, in my experience, evolution is touched on very lightly if not altogether skipped. The teacher doesn't have to use that part of the textbook if they don't want to, and most kids won't do extra reading just cause they want to!

I did get teased for sure.. and I really didn't understand the whys of what was going on to try to explain it to my classmates. and my parents really should have been more proactive about making sure I knew enough about the topic for it to all make sense.

I don't think 8 is too young to begin sex education, but I do think discussing the mechanics of it is for a higher grade level. When I was a teenager (i'm 34 now), most lost their virginity at around 15 or 16. Now the norm is closer to 12. If a school is going to teach the mechanics of sex to kids when they are a bit higher, I think they should teach both hetero and homosexual practices.

back when my kids started JK they came home with a letter explaining about how they would be learning sex ed, yes at age 3-4. It was just the very basics, but still more then they really needed to know. This was in Ontario, and again very basic stuff. But as they went up in grades it increased big time.

Hmmm - I'm not sure why parents wouldn't be allowed to withdraw their kids from sex ed that they find inappropriate, but they'd have to be a little nuts not to have some discussions about it fairly early.

You certainly don't want your daughters learing about sex from the older boys in their school. I had friends that were convinced by older boys that oral sex wasn't really sex and that if the girl was on top she couldn't get pregnant.

It's a bit strange actually, apparently it's already in the charter for schools, not sure why they need a law.

I learned sex ed in school in grade 6.

BUT...

In grade 5 I was dared by this b1tch Jill to ask the teachers assistant if she masturbated. I had no idea what that meant so I asked. Yea... I ended up in the office over that one.

Also in grade 5 I was told by classmates that this kid Doug popped a ####### for me, and I didn't know what that meant so when I got home from school and my mom asked me how my day was I blurted out: "Dougie popped a ####### for me"

So by grade 6 my mother had pretty much explained the birds and the bees to me due to all of the junk that was coming out of my mouth the previous year.

Donne moi une poptart!

I never took sex ed... my school just never taught it! I went to Catholic schools all my life and their way of teaching sex is to just pretend it doesn't exist or that nobody has sex before marriage. With that said, I have friends who went to catholic schools and had some pretty extensive sex ed classes, so It was quite possibly just the school I went to. In a way, I wish I would have had it. I still don't understand how the ####### works, and quite frankly, it scares me.

I remember when my sister was in the 2nd grade my mom and dad pulled her out of sex ed. She came home with a book with a fully naked man in it with labels on it. My mom snapped! But I don't blame her for it, no 7 year old should have to see a middle age limp ####### spread in her textbook.

I definably agree with the intent of this law, although I'm not sure its even necessary...
