if you have close relatives who have gone through some form of it (as I do)...

now that explains a lot.

What excuse does "The Shooter" have I wonder?

Oh! I saw that one --- body dimorphic disorder me thinks. Sad, sad thing.

Yesterday a new show called "Mental" started on Fox. Anyone saw it? I did, and I am not sure yet whether I liked it or not. About a psychiatric hospital and the usual maverick shrink yada yada yada. The dude is a Brit though... but amazingly has really nice teeth :jest:

I saw the trailer - and I know I've seen that guy somewhere before. I thought he was in Buffy, but I can't place him.

He seemed familiar as well. As far as the show goes; I think it might do more harm than good to the public in the sense that, sometimes, mental illness does not respond to treatment-- hence patients do not improve - ever :(

Good thing is -- this will bring it a bit out of the darkness and perhaps a tad of the stigma will allow certain types to be a bit more understanding of how not funny this is.

Well - certainly not over the course of 50 minute TV episode. Its not like House - trying to track down and fix what was broken via the medical equivalent of the Haynes Guide. Mental illness doesn't work that way.

In Treatment on HBO is actually quite good - if you've seen that. All of the drama is between the therapist and the patient over a period of weeks.

just messing with you, buddy.

but you do know that mental illness of axis 1 types are heridetary? they typically manifest in 20-30% of 1st degree relatives with onsets before the age of 28 (men) or 30 (women) in varying degree. so you're too old to be going thru a change, and can count yourself as lucky.

mental health issues are a taboo subject for many people. most are not comfortable with categorising such illness when seen in family members, or correcting with medication when discovered in themselves. admitting that our lives are totally out of control, and subject to the vagaries of nature, is not an easy task. i learned this during my mother's breast cancer struggles, and understand that nature strikes at a whim, often for no reason at all. therefore, if i go nutz tomorrow, i'll just chalk it up to statistical improbability.

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

I am nuts and I chalk it up to being born that way.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Brother - I'm just thinking that if I ever saw the signs in someone I know, what are the appropriate steps to take. Talk to them? Call the police and have the person evaluated? (I think that would really set them off if the police didn't take it further than questioning them). Is there a way that we can intervene and possibly save the lives of others before someone around us snaps?

Don't call the police unless you are threatened. The police are not too well trained in mental illness, so they won't do much good other than transport the person to the nearest hospital for a psych eval. Most of us nut jobs just like someone to listen to us. We don't care if you understand us or not. Remember, we are crazy, not stupid. Well, most of us, anyway.

most people under stress or on the verge ona cting out...need someone to provide some direction and help them find a nonviolent solution to their situation ...

unless, they are asocial..antisocial..then talking except for consequences does no good

by law, in most states, a shrink has to report sincere and credible threats made in confidence.

a credible threat has to include sincerity, a target, a time frame, and a method that is within the capacity of the potential enactor.

therefore, if i stated in therapy that i was going to kill natalie wood in 2099 with a nuke missile, it's not a reportable statement.

as a private person what can you do?

nothing more than a shrink can do, and nothing less.

where can you go afoul?

if you report someone out of malice you can be criminally tried and then held for civil culpability.

if you report someone with genuine concern and they are not a sincere and credible threat they can FOIA your report from the police and sue you into oblivion in civil court.
