hello vj's I know this question has been asked before.I was searching for a similar situation , I didn't find it so I gave up. I think I can get a quicker answer if I post a new one than searching.

My AOS was approved last May 6, 2009 and the IO took my EAD from me and said I don't need it since my CGC is coming. Last week I got my welcome letter and now still waiting for my CGC. My question is can I start looking for a job or start working (if I can get one) even if I don't have my CGC yet? or should I wait for my CGC.

Thank you !

Employers are required to accept any 1 document from list A, or a document from both lists B and C.

For example, if you have a driver license and social security card, you can work now without waiting for the green card. Hopefully it will arrive soon. Good luck.

Not if the SSN has the restriction language printed on it.... the alien MUST then provide the DHS authorization

YMMV

First you find a job, it takes long time to find a job too. Even if the employer wants you to start working, you can say your CGC is on the way by showing "the Welcome Letter" which is a proof that you have been approved as a Conditional Permanent Resident. If you have a stamp of I-551, that is much better which is actually CGC on your passport. Marikiya_dhr has one for example. She can work by just showing that stamp & SS #.

It is so weird, GCs used to arrive in mail about 1 week after "the Welcome Letter", but it didn't happen like that in this month of May for so many people. Now I'm asking myself "Is USCIS working ???????"

I think they are backed up in the GC printshop.

My stepdaughters were approved about 10 days ago, card was ordered but not sent out yet. When my wife's was ordered, it was sent about 4-5 days later.

I have my SS card with work authorized, but passport doesn't have a stamp and I don't have a driver's license nor a state ID card.

You are right it's hard to find a job, that's why I want to start looking for a job while waiting for my CGC, I just want to make sure that it's okay. I'll just show them welcome letter. Thank you very much that's very helpful.

Likely not correct though. Your SS card will say "DHS authorization required" or some such.

BUT this would be in the realm of the employers disgression. You ARE approved, you have your "A" number, it is on your welcome letter. IF the employer is comfortable with that he can give you a job and ask to make a copy of your GC when it comes. You ARE at this moment approved to work, you just don't have the handy plastic card.

I see, thank you for the quick answer! I appreciate it! :)

I would say yes. Go ahead and look for a job. If you happen to get offered one, and don't yet have your greencard, go down to the USCIS office and ask that they stamp your passport.

Now I know why it is taking so long to print GCs. Because USCIS is changing I-90 (GC) lockbox center from LA to Phoenix that is why every GC production has been affected since the end of April 2009. They actually started to work on transition on April 28, 2009. It will take a while to receive the GCs.

That is just your luck, what can I say ?
