Russian Citizenship for baby

Looks like we are going to have a baby soon!!!

I wonder how we (my husband, me, and the baby) should visit my parents in Russia.

I am a citizen of Russia. My husband is a citizen of the United States.

The baby will most probably be born here, in the US. It means that he/she cannot get Russian citizenship by birth (Citizenship Law of Russian Federation, Article 12).

The question is how do we travel to Russia? If the baby is added to my passport (will have a struggle with the Russian Consulate at SF, I am afraid) does he/she still need a visa? Or should we add the baby to husband's passport? Or get his/her own passport?

I am trying to be proactive Is there anything we can do in advance?

I think as the baby will be a U.S citizen he or she will have to have their own passport. All U.S citizen children must have their own passport. I know it used to be common in Europe to add kids to their parents passports but not the case if an American citizen

How wonderful! Congrats!

You can call the Russian consulate with the same question or email them , they are pretty good at answering. I remember reading though, that Russian citizenship is offered to a child born in US only if both parents are citizens. So I think, go the American route, get him his own passport:)

we are really happy, even if the baby cannot have dual citizenship! Having only American citizenship is actually not too bad

Just imagine how I will temporary register my baby at my place of permanent residence in Russia! It's gonna be funny!

In short the Russian consulate in San Francisco will issue your baby Russian citizenship if you follow their procedure. Which will include translating and apostille of the US birth certificate. Filling out forms and paying fees. Then the consulate can add the baby to the Russian passport of the Russian citizen parent. This will get you into Russia visa free but not out. You'll also have to make the baby a US passport. That will allow the baby to exit Russia. Dual citizenship is allowed for babies born of at least on Russian citizen on US soil.
