None of these cold/flu "remedies" are worth a lick. They're all a waste of money.

Want to prevent illness?

Frequent hand washing, sneeze away from others, stay home and avoid work/school when ill.

Already have a Cold or Flu?

Get Rest and plenty of fluids - tea, broths and soups, apple juice.

If needed, take Tylenol or an ibuprofin (Advil, etc.) to lower fever and for aches/pains.

I try to avoid it since a low grade fever is the body's natural response to kill infection. Why reduce the effectiveness of your body's own defense mechanisms?

Obviously, if a more serious infection is feared, or you are running a high grade fever, or if young children or elderly people are involved, it's worth visiting a doctor and considering antibiotics or other appropriate treatments.

I would say that a really good sleep is worth a lot when you are sick with a cold. That's what Neo Citrin always provides for me. I personally think it's worth a fair bit. You probably recover faster, if you can get appropriate sleep.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for all your helpful replies!...

Now I know that Neo-Ctirin (or was it Neo-Citron, or New-Citran?) = Thera-Flu

Update: So yesterday I went to the pharmacy, searched through the shelves. and found "thera-flu". But instead of buying "thera-flu", I bought the generic lemon-flavoured equivalent, which was costs less (about $3.50 for 6 packets). When I got back home, right before bedtime, I mixed up a cup of it for my husband, which he thought was ok. "It tastes better than the honey and hot water, but it does leave a strange aftertaste in my mouth, like I chewed on too many tylenols at once", he teased too. And when he woke this morning, he felt a bit better and could talk more. Meanwhile, we'll keep on trying that, and see how that works. He's also trying: cough drops, antibiotics, plenty of water, and lots of rest/sleep....

Note to self though: Stock up on Neo-Citrin when I go back to Canada for a visit, just in case this happens again....

So we'll see what works.....(if not, we're going to the doctor's, stubbornness and all....)

Meanwhile, I'm figuring out what to do about my many mosquito bites (lol....yeah, those mosquitos especially love pregnant women). Cortizone cream (which worked for me before) I can't use at the moment due to the chemicals in it, so I don't know what else to do, other than to "itch it out"...

Oh well...At least if my husband and I are not feeling well physically, we can feel the same way together....

Ant, you can make a paste of baking soda and water and put that on the mosquito bites - it helps to take out the itch. I use antihistamine cream but I doubt you want to use that while pregnant.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Love me some neo citran, then take some Night Quil!! puts ya right out,lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Hi Kathryn (and Everyone),

Thanks for the idea about the baking soda and (warm, I'm presuming, as it's too humid weather-wise to try hot water now) water too for the mosquito bites!.. :star:

I heard that this baking soda/water formula works for chicken pox (and I think I had one of those types of baths when I had chicken pox as a child), but now that I think about it again, it does make sense that it could be used for other types of itches too.

I'll definitely have try one of those tonight... (note to self: go hunting in the kitchen cupboard cupboards for baking soda)

Lol...reminds me of baking soda+ vinegar= errupting volcano! (don't worry though, I won't be making any one of those in the bathtub)

And like you said, I can't use antihistamine cream now either, but will take a note of that to use later on, as suggested.

Sigh..all I can pretty much have right now is "nothing medication-wise" for any type of illness/sickness, so I guess I have to either "tough it out" or figure out "other alternatives" (such as the baking soda and water that you suggested) for "cures".

By the way, did you all know that neo-citrin type medications contain antihistamine too? Interesting...

Ant (baking soda bathing..ahh.....relief....?)

Hi Emancipation (and Everyone),

Thanks for the ideas about the ice and the oatmeal, for the mosquito bites!... :star:

Actually, I sort-of tried the ice-packs, as I was using those to cool off in this hot/humid summer-like weather. Lol..my husband got a bit concerned though when he saw me using too many ice-packs (about 3 at a time) and said:

"Don't freeze the Baby!"....

So needless to say I had to stop that while he's awake (lol...though he doesn't know have to know while he's asleep..;)..)

As for oatmeal...I only have a few packs of those flavoured instant ones left over, as I usually eat them in the morning, not take a bath in them...lol...

Hmmm...maybe I should put aside a few packs to not eat and use them for a bath instead?

How much oatmeal am I supposed to use?

Does it matter if it is the flavoured instant stuff? Or do I have to buy the non-flavoured and non-instant types?

LOL....between baking soda, ice, and oatmeal....What interesting baths, indeed! I wonder what would happen if I mixed all of them together? (just kidding, I won't do such). Oh boy, the bathtub will be quite the mess to clean out after all of this...

Oh well, whatever works to get those "itchy bug bites" out!

I'll keep you all updated as to what happens with this all this "experimenting" too...Meanwhile, It's bathtime!

Ant (ice+oatmeal bathing+baking soda bathing!...=Science Project Relief!)

Ant.. ice also takes the itch out...

or you could try an oatmeal bath..

Witch hazel also works.

You can buy the foot-soak oatmeal for the bath. You'll come out all soft, too! But don't use the flavoured oatmeal packs.... just straight cooking oats. Though I'm not so sure about taking an actual bath with them. I imagine they'd clog the drain.

If you go to a natural health food store Ant they will sell you colloidal oatmeal.. I think it's just not been processed for human consumption. It's not instant oatmeal silly

I put the dry oatmeal in a blender and made it into a powder and then added it to warm water. When I had cellulitis a year ago it was the ONLY thing that stopped the itch.

I had a really bad cold when I went to visit my fiance in the US -- so you can only imagine my horror when I found out they wasn't Neo Citrin ANYWHERE! I ended up drinking super hot boiling water with tea (I used Red Rose) and squeezing half a lemon. I did that for a week straight, drinking it about three times a day or whenever my throat would itch or I would feel horrible. I also took Tylenol Day & Night as well and my cold went away! :) It works!

I was just wondering what other countries neo citran is available in. I find it kind of strange that I discovered it here in Austria, which at the time was great, better than anything you could buy in England, and I thought it was only available here in Austria until I saw this thread about it being available in Canada it just made me wonder where else we can get it, I have take use Thera flu in the US but it's not nearly as good.
