Help for a friend: Russian married to USC

I meet and made friends with a girl from Russia on this forum. She came to the US August 2008 together with her two kids, got married September last year but had to go back to Russia to escape her abusive USC husband.

My friend left a good job in Russia thinking she would be marrying the man of her dreams, she paid for her K1 and K2 (for her kids) medical and all interview expenses in Russia. She also paid for their plane tickets to the US and back to Russia. But of course the dream turned into nightmare for her and her two kids... After she was back in Russia, the husband still kept in contact trying to win her back but would then resort to verbal abuses after a few minutes of talking with her especially when she tells him he had lost all his chances with her completely... then when tax season came, he called her again asking for her social security number and also asking if he could send the tax papers for her to sign. My friend refused to and told him she will never sign anything for him again but the ex husband told her he could easily get her SSN and that he will file it with her anyway. The abusive ex husband is a policeman in florida, who probably thinks he is above the law.

My friend is not happy that the husband still gets tax credit by filing married (and probably getting tax credit for her two kids also) after what happened to them. She has asked the husband to file for divorce and the husband just kept putting it off so my friend has decided to take matters in her own hands and file the divorce herself but she could only do so in Russia since she is there, her question is: She wants to know what she could do to have that Russian divorce decree be acknowledged here in the US, particularly in Florida.

Any bit of information that could help her would be greatly appreciated.

she needs to just get a divorce and let it go.... there is nothing stopping her ex- from doing what he is doing until such time as he is audited by the IRS....

YMMV

There is nothing your friend can do about how her ex-husband files his taxes with the IRS. Since they're divorced, he should not claim them as their dependents anymore, if he is, he's breaking the law. That's now his beef, not hers and she needs to move on. Karma will eventually catch up to him.

In behalf of my friend, thank you for all the advise, i will relate everything to her. After her failed marriage, she has just been too ashamed to post on vj again, although I have assured her she has nothing to be ashamed of since what happened to her marriage was not her fault. She is a very beautiful and great woman and what she and her 2 kids endured during the 3months they were in Florida with the husband (hopefully soon to be ex) was really heartbreaking. I just wished she reported his abuses to the authorities before she went back to Russia. But it was over and done with, I am just happy she had the courage to leave him right off for the sake of her kids safety and well being.

Here is some input from a friend of mine that is an attorney in Florida. I forwarded the original post and that is what is referred to in the response:

As far as the posting, it would be necessary for the lady to get the divorce and the ask the court to domesticate the foreign judgment of divorce and ratify it as a Florida order so it would have full force and effect. It is not the difficult to do, just need to do it in the County where the man lives. The Clerk will require a certified translation to accompany the original document.

Thank you very much for this info.. Would it be ok if she just mail it from Russia or does she need to go back to Florida to do it?
