Dear VJers,

When planning a baptism or other religious event in your family, did you attempt to combine both religions in an effort to make an interfaith "blessing" so to speak? How did you do so? Did you invite a rabbi, imam, minister, etc to participate in the blessing? Were they willing? Or did you opt to perform the event/ceremony observing only one religion, and hope to combine faiths when possible in the future?

Please share...

Interesting question. I'm facing a similar situation in the coming months.

I'm Jewish, my fiancee is Buddhist.

We had a Buddhist ceremony in Thailand last fall. When she comes here on her K-1 visa we will get married. I'd been planning to have a small secular non-religious ceremony, which we may still do. However I also thought we may find a Reform Rabbi who would be willing to perform a Jewish wedding ceremony for us. Orthodox and Conservative Rabbis would not marry us (unless she converts to Judaism, which we have intention for her to do). But I think that many Reform Rabbis (the more liberal branch of Judaism) may do so. I haven't really researched it yet, just thinking out loud here.

Infant baptism is just plain weird and a Victorian invention.

From at least the third century onward Christians baptized infants as standard practice.

Origen, for instance, wrote in the third century that "according to the usage of the Church, baptism is given even to infants" (Holilies on Leviticus, 8:3:11 [A.D. 244]). The Council of Carthage, in 253, condemned the opinion that baptism should be withheld from infants until the eighth day after birth. Later, Augustine taught, "The custom of Mother Church in baptizing infants is certainly not to be scorned . . . nor is it to be believed that its tradition is anything except apostolic" (Literal Interpretation of Genesis 10:23:39 [A.D. 408]).

Indeed, religion or no religion, sometimes it's important for the sake of family and their views on life, tradition, religion, afterlife, etc... In this day and age, at least for us, we need all the help and happy thoughts we can get!

Anyway, thanks for the ideas... Please keep them coming!

Thank god both me and the wife are both non-religious.

That did not make sense.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

That looks like some high-caliber firepower there. I'm just a gun n00b so what would I know?

My reaction is to play Bugs Bunny to your Elmer Fudd routine. .... Hey, what's up doc?
