If one changes the pie filling, it's also known outside Quebec.

In Alberta for example, Saskatoon pie with cheddar or colby is excellent (yes, I have tried it).

So, as an American, my wonderful Canadian SO has told his family what my family eats as a snack on Christmas day and, according to him, they all say "yuck" and how can we stand to mix those "tastes". So, here's my chance to find out if he & his family is weird or if this is truly an "American" thing... like poutine is "Canadian".

We eat cream cheese with cocktail sauce (like what you eat with shrimp) poured on top of the cream cheese brick. Then, you put crabmeat on top of the cocktail sauce. This is served by cutting off a portion of the cheese brick and then you use a cracker (such as Ritz or Town House or Club Crackers).

Soooo yummy!!! I think it has to do with the sweet (cream cheese), salty (crabmeat), and tangy (cocktail sauce).

Oh, this is a variation of one of my Mom's favourite appetizers for parties - you take the block of cream cheese and put it on a platter - then you take a jar of cocktail sauce and pour it over the cheese and then you take a tin of cocktail shrimp and pour it over the cheese and sauce. Serve with a platter ofRitz crackers - it is always a big time favourite! So, it isn't just an American thing - Mom was Canadian born and bred.

Oh my... is he in for a shocker - as is the rest of his family that this is not a new food or a strange food to Canadians! Thank you sooo much! I feel "validated" for my favorite Christmas snack!!! :P

Maybe I'm alone in this, but I think poutine is disgusting. I've had it and although I tried to give it a fair shot, it's just gross. Whose bright idea was it to combine french fries, gravy and cheese? It doesn't help matters that the cheese resembles little clumps of snot.

As for weird food combinations... my brother has everyone beat. He likes to make sandwiches consist of both of apple sauce and horseradish together. That's it. No meat or cheese or anything else. His sandwiches make poutine seem edible. :P

That just brought back a memory...

When I was at McDonald's as a little kid, I remember a lady walking by me with a french fry up each nostril.

Swiss Chalet sauce is the best

It's got kind of a spice to it too. When I lived there I got the grocery store version Swiss Chalet sauce, but it tastes nothing like the restraunt version. I always get a double order of the sauce when I eat there...

I really don't like Swiss Chalet sauce. I suppose that's because I didn't grow up with a Swiss Chalet around and so I can count on one hand the number of times I've been there.

I LOVE cheddar cheese with my apple pie. In fact, I will eat apples and cheese together just like that. I really like apples with peanut butter in the middle. My husband thought that was pretty strange.

I actually didn't really like Swiss Chalet sauce when I tried it at the restaurant but one place where I worked bought those packets of it and I tired it again and liked it...

I sometimes eat apples and cheese too.... but I have never tired cheese on my apple pie..

Fried pickles are yummy, but they are kind of common.

I like mayonaise or cream cheese in spaghetti sauce.

And a favorite of mine from childhood is a tomato sandwich-that's alot better than the onion sandwiches that my mom used to eat.

Yes, this is making me hungry now too. :D

I guess I like a few weird things:

Sauteed dandelions - not the stem and flower, but the green leafy parts. Italians grow this especially for eating - they are very bitter, but I love them.

I don't do this regularly, but I love dipping white bread in fruit juice, preferably Fruite Strawberry juice haha. This was more a childhood thing.

I like to dip my fries in Frosties or soft serve ice cream....

I also like ketchup on my eggs... but that almost seems normal to me, even though my fiance thinks I'm weird. He eats his eggs with rice (Filipino thing) and I've taken to eating my eggs with rice too, and ketchup... and rice and ketchup together are weird.

This isn't really a specific food, but I love mixing food on my plate. Both my brother and sister can't even have their food touch eachother on a plate and I'm the exact opposite, I love just mixing it all and tasting all the flavours at the same time! Gross! but so good!

How 'bout mayonaise and french fries  YUCK!!!!! This is eaten in Germany

pretty common in the restaurants I worked at in Canada - nothing ike fresh, hot fries and a little ramekin of mayo to dip :)

Oh yeah, that's soooo good! If anyone is familiar with LICKS in Ontario, they have this condiment called GUK... it's like mayo and relish mixed together, so yummy on a burger or fries dipped in it

Strangely enough, I've never been to Licks... but I love Relish!! I'm still waiting for my shipment from Nevada, LOL.
