Weird food combinations

So, as an American, my wonderful Canadian SO has told his family what my family eats as a snack on Christmas day and, according to him, they all say "yuck" and how can we stand to mix those "tastes". So, here's my chance to find out if he & his family is weird or if this is truly an "American" thing... like poutine is "Canadian".

We eat cream cheese with cocktail sauce (like what you eat with shrimp) poured on top of the cream cheese brick. Then, you put crabmeat on top of the cocktail sauce. This is served by cutting off a portion of the cheese brick and then you use a cracker (such as Ritz or Town House or Club Crackers).

Soooo yummy!!! I think it has to do with the sweet (cream cheese), salty (crabmeat), and tangy (cocktail sauce).

I've never been to any Christmas function in Canada where this wasn't served. It's in all the cookbooks as well. I've never heard it served like this though, with the brick just being whole. We always mix our crabmeat with the cream cheese, and then pour the cocktail sauce on over top. Delicious.

I've never heard of it but it doesn't sound like a weird combination to me.

I don't think I have any weird food combinations. But about once or twice a year I eat Cheez Whiz and mayonnaise sandwiches. Is that weird?

People say I have the most oddest eating habits. Then again I don't really mix and match the oddities (I tend to like seafood like squid and octopus too much), but never really mixing them up with anything bizzare like cuttlefish and peanut butter sandwiches or anything like that.

Just looking at this thread. I now see that I am actually normal in my eating habits and anyone that thinks I'm a freak, I'm going to direct them to this thread.

This rocks as I'm laughing at all the craziness...

I'm just a wanderer in the desert winds...

My daughter will make a great looking sandwich with lunch meat and cheese, mayo etc....usually salami or summer sausage and then she spreads on a thin layer of raspberry or strawberry jam - guess the sweet goes with the salty and tangy - seems gross to me though

Thanks to my hubby, I'm now a fan of pickles dipped in peanut butter..it sounds nasty, but it's actually really good!

Also, I like cheeze whiz and pickle sandwiches, and I put hot sauce on pretty much everything I eat.

Um..that is one of my faves, lol! Actually, I heard that chicken sauce from McDonald's really is just straight up mayo, so for those of you that use it on your fries, apparently there is no secret ingredient.

Oh yeah, that's soooo good! If anyone is familiar with LICKS in Ontario, they have this condiment called GUK... it's like mayo and relish mixed together, so yummy on a burger or fries dipped in it

peanut butter and bacon, Katchup on scrambled eggs only way I will eat eggs btw, soya sause on spegetti is good too, Nutella and PB is yummy (i love the kraft PB and Chocolate in the same jar),umm what else was mention oh ya fries with katchup then I use the sweet and sour sauce from McDonalds, I dont like spicy foods or mustard or mayo or seafood so anything in that way is out.

One of my favorite food when pregnant was rice with cheap steak/stewing beef cut up real small and 2 kinds of vegies like corn and carrots all mixed together with lots of soya sauce. I make a big pot of it the kids all love it but then my plate gets an added dose of katchup I just can't eat it with out it. I pretty much cant eat any rice now without katchup on it.

Katchup is my only condiment I use and I use it alot lol.

Something my parents made alot when I was a kid was noodles, its was elbow macaroni, fried up grounbeed with mushrooms and onions with the usual spices then added soya sauce to the meat when all cooked then added it tot he noodles and more soya sauce mixed all and eat. My kids love it too.

Oh, this is a variation of one of my Mom's favourite appetizers for parties - you take the block of cream cheese and put it on a platter - then you take a jar of cocktail sauce and pour it over the cheese and then you take a tin of cocktail shrimp and pour it over the cheese and sauce. Serve with a platter ofRitz crackers - it is always a big time favourite! So, it isn't just an American thing - Mom was Canadian born and bred.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
