Hello guys!

Just wanted to ask those of you who already got married on a K-1. Does it matter which state you do it in? The thing is that we live in Indiana and that's where we are registered with the USCIS. But we would like to get married in Virginia where my fiance's parents live. Do you think it would be a problem and is there something that we need to do for that? Thanks. Any help would be appreciated.

It does not matter to USCIS.

You will have to get a marriage license in Virginia. You should be able to find that information online.

although i didnt file a K-1, I'm sure that it doesnt matter which state you marry in, as long as you're legally married

Doesn't matter to USCIS or Immigration...but remember that every state is different. Some states require you to get a blood test to prove you are not related. So be sure to contact the local court house in your area to find out exactly what you need to do to get married there.

Good luck, and congrats! :)

Good point!! Although I hadn't heard that one before. I know that some states also require a SSN when you register for the license, so you need to check on that too and give your self time to acquire it.

In Virginia you can be married the same day you obtain your license, no blood test is required, and no SSN is required. You will need appropriate records, ie., birth certificates, passport, government-issued photo IDs (passports are an example) but otherwise, there's not much fuss at all. USCIS only requires that you be married within 90 days of arriving on the K-1 visa.

Get some good photos of the wedding and any honeymoon for the time you have your AOS interview. You can obtain a certified copy of your marriage certificate about ten days later at the local courthouse, or they can mail it to you upon request (there is a fee). Get several certified copies, just to have around.

Question - I know that a few states require a blood test to prove you do not have a sexually transmitted disease (usually Syphillis) or that a bride does not have rubella, but I have never heard of a state checking relationships via blood. Most of the laws requiring blood tests long predate DNA testing, when paternity testing was much less reliable. What state do you think requires a relationship blood test?

I don't know if Kentucky (where we live) requires a blood test. I think that in Eastern Kentucky you may need to prove that you ARE related to marry.
