But once we have our wedding certificate and before I get the GC, could I go to the SSN office and ask for a new SSN card with my new name just for bank, phone stuff? It still will have the work conditions things i guess. And then in the AOS papers, I will also ask for a new one so i can have the work conditions removed

They won't change the name on your SSN card until you have your greencard in your married name. They go by the name that is in your passport, and that is on your Visa when you enter - it is a solid form of ID, and your marriage cert isn't. Once you have a GC, that is the level of validity that they need to change your name. The lady explained it to me when I was getting mine. It was the same when I was put on my husbands bank account - I had my marriage cert with me, but he said my card would be put in the name on the visa and in the passport until I can produce my green card.

How do you get your GC with your new name? Do you just fill the papers with your new last name?

Fill all your AOS documents with your new married name, then your GC will come with your new name on it

Others that have their GC in married and passport in maiden carry their marriage cert to prove the name difference when going thru customs

Once you get your green card the work authorization restriction can be removed, you don't have to wait for naturalization.

I told my husband what you said and though we were annoyed the SS office here gave us misinformation, he said it's really no big deal to him since he's got the greencard and that's what his employer needs anyway. I guess it really doesn't make a difference if he gets a new card or not, but it's nice to know he can

Yes the marriage cert is the only way to explain why your passport and GC have different last names on them. Mind you, people have told me when you come back to the US, they only ask to see your GC, not passport. But, better to carry the marriage cert with you to be safe!

Yes as soon as I got my GC, I went to the local SSN office straight away and 5 days later, got my new card w/o restriction on it

I JUST had my interview last week at the embassy in Montreal. My passport is still in my maiden name and the lady who interviewed me said "the green card will be in your maiden name, it has to be the same as the passport, is that a problem?" I said "not at all!" Basically I'm just doing the 2 year card, and by then I'll change my name over with all my documents.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think if you file AOS after marriage here in the US when you entered using a K1 visa, then you have the option of using your married name on your green card?

Yes, if you are filing for a CR1 then you get the green card in the name that is in your passport - they are assuming you have already updated your passport with your married name since you are filing as married. When you come to the US to get married, however, you file to adjust your status immediately after your marriage and it is unlikely you have had the time to change your passport, so you use the AOS application to change your name for your green card by listing the name you want to use. The marriage certificate proves your legal right to use that new name.

I also have a SSN. My mom got it when I was like 10yrs old. I plan to waith till I have my marriage certificate and get my EAD then will go to SS office to have name changed and "not valid for work" removed. Then when i get my GC, I will go again to remove restrictions....Hope it doesn't take too long....

That's what I believe also. I think taht USCIS understands the name change situation after marriage. I'm hoping to have all docs in my married name.

I'm not changing my name at all. Totally keeping my maiden name. Will this make things easier for me with travelling and paperwork and all that other good stuff?

I'm glad I came across this thread. I worked in the US back in 2004 for a year and they issued me a SSN. I didn't realize that the SNN sticks with me for life. I guess I was under the impression that I would get a new number with this whole process.

My question is.... should I call someone to give the number, because unfortunately I did not include it in the I-129F form.

Any suggestions?
