If you cut through all the rhetoric, partisan BS & misc nonsense the fact is that Powell is a moderate Republican & Cheney is far to the right. If your views are moderate then you think Powell is correct... he feels that the Republican party should move towards the center. If your views slant far right then you side with Cheney. Personally I think the right wingers represent what's wrong with the Republican party these days but that is just my opinion. You be the judge.

I understand why liberals want conservatives to be more like them. What I don't understand is why they don't expect us to disagree with that kind of thinking. America deserves differences in political thought. Their desire: two parties, one filled with moderates and the other filled with liberal ideologues, won't benefit the nation at all.

The main problem with the right is that they are intolerant of other views & are quick to label anyone with opposing views as a liberal (which in the minds of right wingers is slightly better than being labeled a child molester). The fact is that that more Americans fall into the moderate category (independents, moderate democrats & moderate republicans) than either far right or far left (real liberals), so the perception of the right is based on a falsehood. In the end this makes the right look like angry, bitter extremists & the more they blame "liberals" for everything the more ridiculous they appear.

Is it the moderates or the liberals who call conservatives "racists", "bible thumpers", "xenophobes", "hicks", "homophobic", and other measured terms of intolerance? As a conservative, I have first hand experience with this practice. I'd like to ask for Miss California, too, considering what she went thru publically with angry, bitter, ridiculous, intolerant non-conservatives.

You mean like Barney Frank ripping into a member of the College Democrats after the guy asked him a question on campus? Most liberals can't believe anyone would ever question their good intentions and they rarely are.

More liberals polled remain more bitter than most conservatives. Rich white guys don't riot. Usually liberals are more likely to be dissatisfied with the status quo by nature.

Well there is a difference between right-leaning, far right & reactionary... personally I don't have much sympathy for negative labels thrown on the reactionaries because they do have racist views & most of their beliefs are based on hate & stereotypes. The far right is sometimes lumped into the same category... sometimes deservedly so & sometimes not.

As for what happened to Miss California I totally agree that it was blown out of proportion & I denounce the reaction to what was essentially a non-issue.

Valid points, but the fact remains that the right sees politics as them vs. the liberals, when in fact probably only something like 10-20% of politicians & Americans are actually liberals. The right has a very strong tendency to blame those awful "liberals" instead of taking responsibility for their own actions.

Come on, get real, we watch the Left at work time and time again with their intolerance, in fact when Obama even tried to portray himself as "inclusive"... by inviting Rick Warren to say a simple prayer, the Left either hit the roof or remained silent against those who did.

Middle Eastern terrorism and Iraq's part in it has been studied and debated for decades. However anyone may feel about Bush's war in Iraq, one can only be honest when one includes the fact that the issue of WMDs in Iraq was a subject of ongoing concern and intelligence gathering since President Reagan was in office. Political history in hindsight is often revisionist and self-serving, but not beneficial for a clear understanding as to what brought us to any given point.

And yet, no wiggling around will change the fact that all presidents pre W had the wisdom not to march into a country w/o having an explicit exit strategy and none of them would have ever considered doing so without an explicit madate and the backing of the international community.

You're kidding, right? This is a joke?

Vietnam comes to mind . . .

No, I am not kidding. We were talking about Iraq.

Vietnam. One would hope we've learned something.

I don't condone the shenanigans of the far right or far left... different sides of the same coin.
