Since you applied AOS while in US, CR-1/IR-1 doesn't apply to you. Though you will receive 2 year conditional GC which is what a CR-1 applicant gets.

Now for the difference

CR-1 is for people who are married for less than 2 years

IR-1 is for people who have been married for more than 2 years upon US entry.

CR-1 applicant gets 2 year conditional GC, IR-1 applicant gets 10 years unconditional GC. Both file the petition at USCIS while the beneficiary is still living in their home country or may be living in US with a tourist visa but will eventually will have to go to their home country for the interview.

I know, when you're new all these letters & numbers gets confusing! Trinket said it right....

CR1 - Condition Residency. If you are married for 2 years or LESS than you get a CR1 visa with an automatic 2 year green card, 90 days before that visa expires you do some paperwork, and if everything looks good you get a 10 year freen card.

IR1 - if you've been married for 2 or MORE years. 10 year green card!

I really don't know if it's at the time of your visa interview, OR if it's when you activate it at the border. Definitely look into that. There were two ladies at my interview this week in Montreal that would've been having their 2 year anniversary in 2 days from the interview, so questionable what visa they'd get.

If you applied for AOS and you're in the U.S. then I don't believe these are applicable to you, but someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

You will receive an IR-1 visa and therefore a 10 year green card if you have been married 2 years at the time of entry to the US, not approval of the visa.

Good luck

Thanks everyone this is helpful! It can get confusing with all the codes and numbers and forms etc. But i also thought that it was something for people who applied for the green card overseas, however, i always want to make sure! hehe

I hope everyone has a great memorial weekend (for those of us in the US)

:)
