well you asked.

given several tidbits in the story - i too think the perp knew the family (hence the motorcycle helmet). also nothing about anything noticed to be missing. those two items make it quite plausible that the guy knew the family and went there to kill them, quite probably just the woman as she was his first victim. the husband next as he was home and it was either take him out or run a serious risk of being id'ed.

note the kids were not killed - debatable if this was due to them leaving or if he chose not to take them out.
