Help! Translating birth certificate in Mexico from Spanish to English

Hi everyone,

I just got my K1 visa approved and I want to have all the papers ready for the Adjustment of Status. I am from Mexico and my Birth Certificate is in Spanish. Do I need to go to a translator or something to get it translated? or can it be either myself or my brother? Both of us are fluent in English.

Then the translation would be just on a normal piece of paper not on an official paper, would that be a problem?

I'm basically clueless about this process so any help is welcome from someone who has done it and even better if they had done it in Mexico.

If it's not in English, yes - it must be translated.

Umit's birth certificate was translated into English, it had the same format, just swapped out the Turkish for English.

She had a certified translator do it, but you can do it, as long as you certify it as a true copy.

Note the translator does NOT need to be a paid professional, as long as the person "Certifies" their translation you are OK.

Please submit certified translations for all foreign language documents. The translator must certify that s/he is competent to translate and that the translation is accurate.

The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification. A suggested format is:

Certification by Translator

I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________________.

Signature_________________________________

Date Typed Name

Address

I would agree with the other posts in that you do not need an "official" translator if either you or your brother is fluent in both english and spanish. However, you should include a statement about the translator's competence. For example, at the bottom of the translation place the following declaration: "I, (translators name), hereby certify that the above is an accurate translation of the orgiginal birth certificate in SPANISH, and that I am competent in both ENGLISH and SPANISH to render such translation." Follow this with the date and translators signature.
