And there's not even one building like that in Australia, right?

Well based on the numerous awards the city's win, again and again, I would say not really. We don't have ghettos or no-go zones,

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Looking at data from both the Fed and RBA, it's apparant that Australia has done a better job with monetary policy. They've consistently kept their interest rates above that of America, (in '2008 by as much as 300% higher than the US Federal funds target). So the Aussies aren't devaluing their currency by open-market expansion as much as we are.

Monetary expansion is never good for an economy. (F.A. Hayek won a Nobel for his superb analysis of business cycles.) A known by-product of monetary expasion (inflation) is poverty. I don't buy into your Nationalistic fervor-- Americans are no sloppier or lazier than Australians. America has been made poorer by it's fiscal and monetary policies. Division of labor, specialization, and economies of scale have suffered due to cheap credit crowding out sound capital investments, and all our resources bid away due to high costs. These are all monetary problems. There are insufficient resources to cover the mounting debt we are dug into.

As a side, the manufacturing industry in Australia has been falling for a year, which is a sign that recession has come to Australia. The RBA is starting to cut rates now, which will make every Australian poorer, so it looks like the RBA, like good lapdogs, are following the Fed.

Well our dollar is rising and we also still have quite expensive houses. The unemployment rate is till the lost out of any and every English speaking nation. At the end of the day quality of life matters. Something the country is loosing daily. Even if people lose their jobs though, they are covered with a range of benefits to get by. Including health care costs.

What cracks me up s that you believe the free market would fix this. Sorry Matt but Detroit is a consequence of the free-market. Where a company can do as they please destroying a city. Then when you combine that with liberal leaders, presto you have 2009 Detroit.

Public / Private partnership is the way to go and there are thousands of examples of it scattered around the world. Time and time again private industry and the rich have failed this country. Then again so has your poorly elected and chosen government. But what do you expect from people who elected their leaders based on their likability and race (first this, first that); Rather than actual performance. I don't exactly see Australian's living in tents. Though what I do see is the hundreds of awards the country is wining. They are also almost always ranked in the top 10 of any study. Not too shabby for a country of 21 million, almost the size of the US.

Not even one building with a broken window or a run down property? Absolutely amazing. And no crime either? You are so fortuate to have chosen such a paradise for your home.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but there are not too many other first world countries that look anywhere near as ghetto as the United States of America.

Why don't exactly have trailer park after trailer park or ghetto after ghetto there. A country is what you make of it. Looking at those pictures, America has failed and epically. So get used to it as it's only a sign of what is to come.

After this financial crisis, I think the rest of the world has realized don't listen to these corrupt fools. Luckily they have not seen the pictures of places like Detroit.

Good thing you don't live in America and have to suffer what we do. Maybe, if you're lucky, the rest of the world will discover the utopia of Ausralia and begin migrating by the tens of millions like they have done to the US. The secret is out now.

I know why people are getting their panties in a twist. Any criticism goes against the at birth ingrained opinion of we are the best. Maybe if you got over that arrogance and pride you would wake up to reality. Then again I think not because another thing ingrained in the psyche of so many people here is the each to their own system. Aka if it doesn't affect them people don't give a #######.

There is no secret. Other developed countries and their citizens tend to travel and learn from one another. It's America who thinks they are the best and know everything yet one of the crappiest looking countries in the developed world. We also tend to learn about one another at school. I remember seeing a study where less than 20% of Americans had passports. So of course if you stay in your shitty little world you'll think it's the best thing since slice bread. AKA The constitution. Like many things and opinions here, the only basis of being the best is opinion. Not reality or an actual comparison.

How anyone can defend Detroit and the many towns and cities like it is beyond me. Dam straight there are not any Detroits or their equivalents in AUS. Unfortunately for your NE and CA Yank, having a big mouth and opinion for everything does not equal success. If it did, you guys would be billionaires. If the country could revive those 200,000,000 who live between those sh-thole cities, the country has a good chance to rise again.

Like I said, you're fortunate. You live in Australia, the center of the universe. No need to gloat and rub it in our American faces. You are superior in every way. Why can't you be happy with that? Do you feel the need to rub it in our poor, under achieving faces? What kind of arrogant person are you? Where is your heart?

Expensive is not good, Constellation. It's a sign that your scarce resources are being bid up by credit expansion, which as I said, is about to drop. If RBA reverses it's cheapening credit that it started in Q2 2008, AU maybe able to mitigate damage.

Again, the free market, had nothing to do with this recession, nor with Detroit. Keyphrase: Business Cycle. You do know what that means, right?

Funny we don't have these sorts of 'business cycles' in AUS. We actually hold companies accountable rather than allowing them to do what is best for themselves. Like paying a fair wage.

Last recession in Australia was 1988, not surprisingly and yet again brought on by NY yanks. Sold growth since then. And I mean solid.

They were also smart enough to buddy up with China and other countries.

Your going to make a fool of yourself if you try to suggest that AUS has just as much poverty as does the US.

First of all indefinite unemployment benefits coupled with free health care is more than the minimum wage here.

Second of all you must have missed some of my links above.

Have a look at these homes. Look a little dingy right. Hmm, unfortunately for you they are worth well over $700k.

Yeah you got me. I posted 20 photos of one city alone and you found one picture. You're right what can I say.

PS I actually ran out of room because there where another 50 or so plus photos of different builds. I could move on to crapcago or South Central LA
