Not sure if you can apply before you move to the States. It also will depend on the State you're getting married in. Some require SSN for the marriage license ( like SC) and K-1's can apply because of that. If you don't need it for that...wait until you get your EAD, then you can apply in your married name.

Hopefully someone else with lots more knowledge can help you with this. I'm just going by some of the things that I read.

You need to fill in your timelines! Are you eligible? I don't think you are, so if I'm right then NO but you can get a ITIN W7 http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw7.pdf

K1 can get a SSN shortly after arriving in the US. VJ Guides explain http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.ph...om&page=ssn

There's a section on K1 if you scroll down. If you don't apply within 76 days of arrival, then you have to wait until you get the green card because your I-94 is too close to expiration.

The SS card will be marked with a restriction that it is not for work unless DHS authorized. After you get the green card, then go back and change your name and get the condition removed at the same time. Your marriage license will show your name change. They will mail a new card in your married name that does not say valid for work with DHS authorization.
