Tax items for interview

I've noticed a lot of people mentioning that there are some tax forms that are asked for at the interview. Is this the originals of the copies that were sent in with the affidavit of support?

The reason I'm asking is because when I got my letter from the consulate and I went through the list of documents it said that everything was in order. Also since my father in law is the sponsor, does that mean I have to bring the originals of his tax documents or just my wife's even though she is not really "the sponsor"?

I'm just a wee bit confused after reading some other threads so hopefully someone understands my confusion and can point me in the right direction, thanks!

Basically they want the W2, 1040 and/or any tax submission or pay stubs you might have that show the income for 2008. When most of us submitted our I-864 with all these documents it was only up to 2007 taxes because it was well before the April tax deadline.

I met some people at the interview that where asked for 2008 taxes but they did not have any. I don't know what happened to them after the last stage of their interview though... if anything maybe it will postpone things until you send the proof? Just have it with you for your interview because it's better to be safe than sorry!

We brought my husband's complete 2008 tax return including the W2 and all supporting documents. We also brought 2009 pay stubs to date. When our I -864 was submitted we only submitted documents up to 2007. The CO only kept the actual tax return but NONE of the supporting forms or W2. She also gave us back the 2009 pay stubs and all of the transcripts we originally submitted with the I-864!

Our interview letter did not ask for additional tax info but from VJ posts we realized that they would ask for the 2008 return.

I would suggest you bring 2008 returns for the sponsor and co-sponsor if you did not already submit them. Better to be prepared than unpleasantly surprised. Good luck

You don't need to bring ones that you already submitted to NVC, the consulate will already have them.

Did you submit the 2008 return? If not you may want to request tax transcripts for 2008, from the IRS, rather than taking all the documents - that would also be acceptable (for your wife and the joint sponsor).

Also, did you send 3 years of tax returns to NVC with the affidavit of support - or just 2007 or 2008? It's a good idea to take all 3 years tax transcripts or returns with slips with you.

We only submitted 2007, at the interview they asked my Husband for 2006 and 2005 as well (which he had with him).

Yes. They just want a full copy of what your husband/your co-sponsor filed for 2008. My husband is still in school, but working part time so my father in law is our co-sponsor. The first window I went to at my interview, he asked me for my husband's most recent tax filings. I handed over everything we filed (I filed for him online, so everything it printed out, also what we received from the government, etc.), same with my father in law. He basically checked it over to make sure that you're still able to be sponsored, and they put it in your file!

Good luck :)

So by full copy they're looking for every piece of paper involved in the tax return? And do they want originals? The reason I ask that is because obviously we're going back to Alberta after the interview and I'd think that my father in law would like to hold on to his tax information.

They don't state copy or original - I would take both a copy and the original, that way you can offer to leave the copy and ask for the original back. Yes they want every single slip that relates to the earnings on the tax return (ie: not the receipts for deductions etc).
