It used to crack me up that advanced aliens would travel to earth and then pose as human using the alien equivalent of the Groucho Marx Disguise Kit!

AUTOIMAGESEP4701lg.jpg

 I was in high school when the original first aired and the way it was promoted was very clever. Before the show's first airing, the network would show just the ships hovering over the cities and we didn't get to see who or what was inside these crafts until after the second or third week. The show became hokey after awhile, but it had its moments.

I'm willing to give this one a shot.

Slighty OT, but back in college, I took a course that looked out how movies tend to reflect our current fears. So with the remake of V at this time, I can't but wonder if part of it has to do with some of the skepticism and fear....beware of the smiling man bearing gifts.

I remember the TV Trailer for the old series - but parents didn't allow me to watch it (Dad didn't watch Dallas or Dynasty and lumped 'V' in there). If I remember rightly there was a terrorist resistance that fought against the invaders.

Its interesting to me how British and American SF are.

British Sci-Fi series always favored the lone eccentric (e.g. Dr Who) or group of eccentrics getting together no mind the personality differences (e.g. Red Dwarf), whereas US Sci-Fi was always about quasimilitary groups with minor personality quirks acting in unison under a clear leader.

Interesting observation. :) The current Battle Star Galactica dealt with the theme of people who aren't what the seem followed by a resistance.

So I'm wondering what the collective fears of the British are that show up as themes in their movies?

Well we had Blake's 7 in the early 80's - where the main characters were a group of anti-government terrorists.

Hideous production values by today's standards and some rather stiff acting - but great scripts (at least in the first two seasons).

I remember back in the 80's (around the time of V) watching a low budget show based on the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy that aired here on PBS. Adam's humor actually worked well with the cheesy props.

Yeah that was the BBC TV version (Blakes 7 had the same production values as that).

Red Dwarf I liked up until the last two seasons, though I'm not sure I would find it funny these days (originally saw it when I was in my teens), and for unknown reasons the BBC decided to do a Star Wars Special Edition to it and replace all the original miniature effects work with CGI.

Supposedly that was also done to the orginal Star Trek. Don't really see the point tbh - the updated effects don't really add anything to the viewing experience.

Yep, which really...when you strip away the sci-fi part of the shows, they're really just drama (Dynasty, Dallas), set in space. I haven't seen the new Star Trek movie, but I've read one review that said essentially that.

Well all fiction has to have drama - otherwise its not interesting ;)

That's not quite the same as Soap Opera - and most TV shows these days differ from what you used to see in the 60's in that there is a continuing narrative, rather than self-contained episodes with no continuity from one episode to the next. Most of the classic TV series we're familiar with (Mission Impossible, Columbo, Man from UNCLE, Fugitive etc) established a formula and then worked it to death without trying to push the envelope to try to build on it and develop the characters (did you learn anything more about Jim Phelps from MI season 2 to season 7?).

I don't think you can even say that of Star Trek - and most of the continuity and the "friendship" between Kirk and Spock was developed in the movies, rather than the TV series.

Blakes 7 and Dr. Who were the first TV SF series that established episode to episode continuity. They experimented with it over here in the TNG star trek, but it really caught on after Babylon 5 took off - with its preplanned 5 year story arc, which of course gave rise to Farscape (melodramatic but underrated series imo) and the new BSG.
