People who refer to a father figure as "daddy"

Now, I've found it quite common here for adult women to refer to their dad as "daddy". It strikes me as very peculiar for many reasons. One being that it seems a childish thing to say and also because in our world today, it also has a sexual connotation.

Any way, my boss refers to her husband to her kids as daddy. Do any of you think this is all weird?

My dad is called as follows:

DAD or DA (Scottish thing)

"...My hair's mostly wind,

My eyes filled with grit

My skin's white then brown

My lips chapped and split

I've lain on the prairie and heard grasses sigh

I've stared at the vast open bowl of the sky

I've seen all the castles and faces in clouds

My home is the prairie and for that I am proud…

If You're not from the Prairie, you can't know my soul

You don't know our blizzards; you've not fought our cold

You can't know my mind, nor ever my heart

Unless deep within you there's somehow a part…

A part of these things that I've said that I know,

The wind, sky and earth, the storms and the snow.

Best say that you have - and then we'll be one,

For we will have shared that same blazing sun." - David Bouchard

It does? I've never heard it in that way...

I'll admit to using the word Daddy now and again, it's usually just Dad or Pops, but if I'm sucking up I say Daddy, my stepmom hates it. She says I sound like a baby, which I may just do but I really don't care

Well, it's perfectly acceptable when using it in conjunction with the pouty eyes to get something you want

 Yes exactly! My dad is daddy when I want or need something from him... But its mostly in a joking sense, "oh daddy dearest, can you drive me to Toronto tomorrow morning?" :innocent: I would feel like an idiot referring to him as daddy on a day to day basis, it seems quite immature.

Why is it weird?

Especially in the south we often refer to our fathers as "Daddy." And it's generally "Mother and Daddy" or "Mama and Daddy." It's not childish, it's a term of affection. All 4 daughters referred to our father as Daddy until the day he died.

You've never heard the word daddy be used in a sexual sense? Various media outlets whether its pornography or music (mostly rap or reggaeton) use it that way.

It's interesting to see that you guys will use it when you are joking around with your dad or you wan't something out of him. I'm 25 and I can't remember the last time I had to bug my dad for money or something rather.

My 22 year old sister in law will say, "I love my daddy" or "my daddy and i are close"

I just think its weird in my opinion.

It appears that it seemed like an American thing. I know, Jundp, that is common in the south. I never knew any one called their dad that over the age of about 10 until I moved down to New Jersey. I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm just saying I find it weird.

I speak spanish and english to my dad so it depends on what language I'm using.

In Spanish, which was the only language I spoke until i was 3, I call my dad (Pa), (Papa) or (Daddy-prounced the spanish way which comes out sounding like Da-Di). Because of that, in English I used Dad mostly but Daddy quite a bit at home only.

My father had a rule about only speaking spanish in the house because English and French were taught to us in school and he wanted us to maintain our ancestral language (we are from Spain). I'm glad he did that as I am now tri-lingual.

Personally, I dislike using the term daddy when referring to your significant other. If others like it thats all good. But I would never call my fiance Daddy and I certainly wouldn't refer to him in spanish as others do with the term "PAPI" I HATE that. My fiance is hispanic and he also dislikes the term "PAPI". Many hispanic women call their mates this and they are then called "MAMI" in return. NO THANKS. :)

 Funny that you say that. Yesterday I was telling this guy he couldn't park in the president's spot. He says, "no mami, I park right here.." and I was like, "no sir, you can't park there, I'm sorry..." and he then called me mami again.

I was like...okay well..no big deal but..i dont like you calling me that.

I'm not your mami.

Yes Jill, it is VERY creepy. I personally know a few people that do it and it makes me nervous any time i hear them say it.

One couple I know refer to themselves as Mmmy and Daddy. And guess what? They have no kids! I'll call their house and ask " Hey is Mary home?" and her husband will reply, "Oh no, Mommy is at the hairdresser. She'll be back soon."

Or if she answers it'll go like this: "Oh Daddy is planting some things int he backyard right now."

OR (CREEPY) check this one out: "Daddy bought me the most beautiful flowers today."

SERIOUSLY. UGH. Too weird for me and they ALWAYS do it.

I'm with you Jill. I'd never call my husband 'daddy.' But maybe because to me, Daddy is my father. I feel icky now.
