Traveling with I551 stamp

Here is a warning to those who travel with I-551 stamp obtained from USCIS office in place of actual GC.

If you are departing from a small airport in a foreign country and going to US, allow plenty of extra time for your connecting flights.

Reason is this:

Many airport staff have no idea what this stamp means. It may take a long time for them to figure out that you are actually allowed back to the US. In my case, the smaller non-international airport decided that they can check me in on a flight to Madrid-Barajas, but not to my final destination in the US. As a result I missed my flight to the US. It took 2 hour and 6 counters in Madrid to decide that mistake was made and that I should be placed on the next plane back home.

CR-1 Timeline

March'07 NOA1 date, case transferred to CSC

June'07 NOA2 per USCIS website!

Waiver I-751 timeline

July'09 Check cashed.

Jan'10 10 year GC received.

I need to travel a day or two after my interview and I'm hoping that seeing as how I'll be going from the US to the UK and at major airports this won't be a problem for me but I'm glad you mentioned it :)

Interview passed 6/30/09

If he has the I-551 stamp in his passport while he waits for the actual Green Card to arrive that will be sufficient proof for Canadian immigration that he is a bona-fide permanent resident of the US. PRs don't require visas to visit Canada even if they normally would because of their citizenship. So, if he doesn't have his actual green card by then, as long as he has the I-551 stamp in his passport he will be able to visit Canada without a problem.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Thanks Kathryn41 :)

I had emailed Canadian Consulate in Washington and their response was same as yours. My husband will need I-551 stamp in passport (hopefully Charlotte Airport people are smart and stamps the passport properly, I am bit nervous since Charlotte airport isn't a popular POE). In addition to that, he will also need one photo ID issued by United States. I would think that his CR-1 Visa (which expires in 6 months, has his DOB and other biographical info) is a valid evidence. But as a backup plan, we'll try to get him a Driving Learner's permit. Let's see... We've little over 5 weeks to get all the IDs and stuff, maybe we get GC within that timeframe..
