I wonder how much social crime (and worse) is down to the fact that so many people are not treating their mental health issues due to the high cost and lack of insurance?

American crime rates are because this is America. This country has always had a less controllable and less pliant population than Europe. Crime is just a natural byproduct.

I blame it on the Puritans.

Blame? I think not. The devil finds work for idle hands. Not enough time spent in a pew on Sunday, that's what's wrong with America today. Not enough Pure Puritans likely. Too much sex, drugs and rock and roll and liquor.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

The Puritans hate sex, it's not natural.

You are right...

Maybe it has nothing to do with the Puritans at all... who else can we blame?

Oh... Wiccans, i bet...

Oh, I was waiting for this...there's an 'interpretation' of the Constitution in this case, but not in the case of the Second Amendment. ;) If I didn't know any better, I'd say you sound like one of them activist judges deciding to define what the Constitution means rather than what it says.

Dude. The Supreme Court reviewed the case and ruled in favor of the Second Amendment right

to bear arms. The DC ban on handguns was struck down. Get over it.

But if you move to Texas to avoid paying taxes in California you have to live in Texas...

You make it sound as if that's a bad thing. Here's a letter that a friend of mine wrote to me about living in California (before moving to Texas)

Just because half the world dreams of living in California doesn't mean it's a nice place to live. As someone who grew up in Georgia and wasn't a native Californian, this was very obvious. However, those that are from California and have literally never even visited another state, and those that have never been to California but dream of living there, are clueless beyond the point of absurdity.

How can this be? Quite simple. California is the biggest false advertisement in the history of man. There are two different Californias. The glamorous California you see on TV and in the movies, and the ****hole that really is California. And that's the problem. The one percent of California that actually is nice is all you see on TV and in the movies. They conveniently leave out the other 99 percent that's a complete hellhole.

I worked in West L.A., one of the trendiest places in the state. Consequently, I drove by all the hackneyed sites every movie has to show on a daily basis: the Hollywood sign, the Capital Records building, downtown L.A., the POS L.A. subways, Rodeo Drive, the Sunset strip, blah, blah, blah. Somehow these places that look like garbage end up looking good in the movies. How they do this is I haven't a clue.

What do I mean by ****ty? Well, although it never rains in L.A., the streets are littered with Michigan-spec potholes everywhere. Every wall is tagged with various gang artistry. Every building is damn old and should be demolished. The stoplights break for no reason all the time. Just picture Detroit on crack and you get the idea. Oh yeah, the beaches are dirty too. I think the footage they show of California beaches on TV is actually filmed in Florida.

For the sake of saving space, I'll just start listing what else sucks about California:

- Highest taxes in the country

- Second-worst education system in the country

- Worst roads in the country

- Worst traffic by far in the country (on a good day, my 10 mile commute took one hour)

- The highest cost of living in the country (Yes, factor in the average salary in L.A. vs NYC, and L.A. is indeed more expensive by a good margin

Then there's the whole reason why the state's in the ****ter in the first place. All the socialists handing the state to illegals. In California, citizens come second to illegals. Don't get me wrong, if you can help a few people out, I'm all for it. However, if you try to help so many people out to where it significantly lowers every tax payer's standard of living, then you have a serious problem. Furthermore, they try to give them more with every single piece of legislature that comes out.

Of the 17 million people that live in L.A., half are illegal. So they are the direct cause of all the problems listed above because that's where California spends all it's money. For a state that generates such enormous revenue from agriculture, the entertainment industry, the computer technology industry, etc. there's no excuse for any of that and it should be the utopian heaven you see on TV. Too bad Sacramento has better ideas of where to spend the money.

So no, there's absolutely nothing that I miss about California.

I'll try to sum up why I chose to move to Texas as succinctly as possible. First of all, it's dirt cheap. We bought a nice, brand new 2,800 square foot house in a very nice neighborhood in Austin for $195K. In California, twice that amount gets you a one bedroom condo in the ghetto. The public schools here kick ####, which is even more important because my wife's a teacher. There are wide open spaces everywhere, and concrete and asphalt do not cover everything as far as the eyes can see. Yeah, the summers are hot, but we have enough electricity to run the A/C. The air is oh-so clean, and the sky is blue.
