Go to college. If your income is low, you'll qualify for aid from the government. And once enrolled full time (at least in NJ) the college is required to offer you health coverage.

i'm trying to go back to school in the Fall, full time. Just spent 3 weeks sorting out w/ the insurance company & the college health center whether they will cover my pre-existing condition...

But still, i'm going to take a heck of cut in pay, and a heck of a cut in insurance benefits (i actually have good insurance now). i'm lucky though... not many people would be able to take the risk, you know?

Anyway, i'm hopeful it all goes well, and they actually cover what they say they'll cover.

If not, i may have to pull a John Q.

What do you plan to study?

What do you plan to study?

Nothin' that guarantees the same salary as MaWilson (L),

but with any luck, i'll have a better job, a little more pocket change, insurance, and i won't have to babysit paper-pushers all day...

Inchallah....

AJ, you mentioned earlier in this thread - that you think skill set should determine pay. What about demand? It just happens that have a consumer driven economy, which means there are more 'unskilled' jobs out there. Demand then should also effect pay. There's no reason why a cashier at Walmart can't be paid $18 an hour with benefits.

Pay is a function of demand, genius. It's also a function of supply. Read a book, seriously.

Does reading Penthouse letters count?

What's more, pick the right course of study and when you graduate you will likely get a job that offers insurance

Been there done it ;) But as everyone knows, not everyone can/needs to go to college, goes back to this hierarchy thing I was talking about previously in society. Society needs it low income jobs, society needs the toilet cleaners, garbage-men etc etc because if we didn't have them, the country and places we visit would be unhygienic and dirty. Why should those who have low pay or cannot get jobs be exempt from receiving basic health-care? They have just as much right to basic health-care than someone at the top of the tree because they both contribute in their own way to the running of the country.

No matter how often you say it, there is no right to basic health care.

Please define "basic" in the context of health care.

There isn't? How odd, and there was I thinking that everyone is granted access to emergency care regardless of ability to pay. I must have dreamed that...

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

So, we often find people dying in the streets in the US, I just haven't found those streets yet, is that it?

Oh, I have it, the 20 million legal uninsured residents/citizens (and however many illegals) all have remarkably robust constitutions and never get sick nor become involved in accidents? Extraordinary. Surely that deserves further study.

This is a prevailing argument. The cold, heartless Right Wingers don't think that everyone should have access to healthcare....only the ones who can afford it. Fortunately, they are the minority on this issue, so trying to convince them that they aren't heartless is futile.

The point is though, everyone does have access to basic health care, it's just paid for in the most expensive way imaginable. The uninsured may not seek care for every twinge and ailment, but they sure as hell are not dying in the streets, no matter what some might have me believe ;)

That's a specious, self-serving statement. You can argue for universal health care all you want, but it remains undefined and how to pay for it is still undetermined. "Shoulds" aren't worth a damn without a workable plan that doesn't kill incentive, drive out competition and ration care.

In the beginning of this thread, I listed programs which have suffered from the poor performance and management of a government which tends to hand enormous responsibility to unqualified cronies who have never run a business in their lives. The car commission is the latest example, running the auto industry further into the ground.

Tell me how universal health care would be better managed so that health care is fairly distributed, and our tax dollars not wasted and stolen.

Answer that.

Define basic. How would you cut costs?

And if the access is already there, what is all the fuss about?

Explain how health care becomes a right. And under what edict?

There's really no point in trying to convince you what you don't believe. You don't believe that everyone should have access to healthcare regardless of ability to pay. That's your position and fortunately, it isn't shared by the majority of Americans. You'll never be on board with any kind of universal health plan because it goes against your fundamental principle that it is not a right. End of argument.
