Here's another one for all here who have a Spanish-speaking SO: Ask him/her if he/she knows exactly what a "calzoncillo chino" is, and its significance. No cheating, now! :)

hahahaha :) I know what that is already.

Due to the overwhelming clamor, I shall reveal that "calzoncillo chino" = wedgie.

The literal translation (it is explained to me) is "Chinese underwear." This apparently refers to the style of underwear that the Japanese sumo-wrestlers wear, and the presumed effect on the hindquarters.

Words to live by: "Wedgies are a sign of commitment; pedos [see above] are a sign of love." Si, man.

(bump) I have always smiled when the wife comes home with an article of clothing from Banana Republic. Tonight, I explained why. She observed that Ecuador's primary fruit of export is indeed the banana, and she appreciated having been apprised of the double meaning of "banana republic," si man.

I can't get my husband to buy any clothes that are not dirt cheap. What I normally have to do is buy them for him and tell them they were only like $10. He's a cheapskate with that kind of stuff... I think he does the calculation from dollars to peruvian soles in his brain and freaks out.

I can't get my husband to buy any clothes that are not dirt cheap.
I'm serious about this suggestion, si man: Take him to the resale shops (Goodwill, Salvation Army, various church/nonprofit stores). My wife LOVES those places, and so do I. Complete treasures can be found there. Perhaps 13 of my suits (more than half), 85% of my shirts, and 99.44% of my ties come from there -- and they are all of far better quality and fit than what I previously bought in retail stores at full price.

If we buy something that doesn't fit after all, or we don't like it, we donate it back later... unlike a full-retail-price purchase that we might be unable to return for refund, and which we feel obligated to hang on to (because of the price paid) even though we're dissatisfied with it.

I have a contest with two of the ladies at work: Daily, they must guess whether my shirt & tie are both resale, both store-bought (meaning full retail price), or one of each (and, if so, which). They are regularly fooled. The ladies at my dry-cleaners "ooo" and "ahh" over the "new" stuff that I bring in, and they can't believe the prices, when I tell them.

My wife states that Ecuador has no such resale stores -- and the VERY newly arrived wife (also from Ecuador) of another VJer was amazed at what could be found there at such great prices.

In fact, my wife and I have taken approximately six road-trips purely centered around visiting resale shops. The experience is quite addictive, much like a "treasure hunt" that can last for a couple of hours, all day, or all weekend. In terms of fun, planning the routes is nearly as fun as the visits themselves -- and the wife and I both get to see new places and towns.

For all of the positive reasons above, I respectfully recommend that you take your Peruano on a resale expedition, si man.

He needs to go with me to VN one time and he will likely buy a lifetime supply of clothes in a day or so for under 200 bucks..

My USC husband had it easy I feel. I take care of paying utility bills/rent in time, groccery shopping on my own, making food, giving him clean shirts to wear and a clean bed to sleep on to.............basically he is very happy to have got a controlling dominating tyrant of a wife, who controls every aspect of what he eats, wears and breathes (yes I also buy his cigarettes):P

The problem I am having is with above mentioned done and then some, he is still complaing

Let's leave it at that.

What is it about Ecuatorianas (and other South Americanas?) that they consider their U.S. husbands' shirts to be "ugly" and take it as license to go through the husbands' closets and throw things out? The out-throwing did not happen to me (I purged things myself over time, according to my own level of tolerance), but it has happened to other U.S. husbands-to-Ecuatorianas. Explain, please, si man.

I dont think it is purely an Ecuadorian thing. I am Indian and my husband (USC) is from Mexico... When I first met him, I was itching to set his closet on fire when he wasnt looking. Now his closet is much better with my guidance. He literally walks into a store and picks up clothes that he thinks is his size and buys them.. So all his clothes were XXL, 2XL or 3XL which were way too big for him. Now I actually make his try on clothes before purchasing them despite his grumblings. But yeah, every once in a while, I go through his closet and make him throw away his old clothes

It's definitely not a purely Ecuadorian thing. I am from Sweden and I too would like to drench my husbands shirts in gasoline and throw a match on them.

Granted he has inspired me to wear more color instead of the Swedish black, gray and white. Could be because if I promise to come home with some colorful clothes I get to go shopping more often. :innocent:

In general my hubby is quite stylish. There are a few shirts that I HATE, but I've learned (overtime) to look the other way. lol.

We've never been to Goodwill together. But I usually will check them out for jeans. I got a fabulous pair for $5. Hubby thinks they're super sexy and I get a lot of compliments.

There are a lot worse shared hobbies to have than this one, si man! But I wish that I still had (out of many) my shirt with the fish on them, si man. After I donated it, it sold from that resale shop within the week, si man, as did all my other "ugly" shirts, si man. Hmmmph, si man. Edited by TBoneTX

I haunt thrift stores and GoodWill. My husband enjoys visiting them as well although he is more likely to buy things new on sale, not that he has a problem with second hand, he just has a problem taking the time to search through all the clothes to find the ones that fit and he likes:-). We also go garage-saleing together and he has actually picked up some excellent clothing buys at garage sales! He likes to show off his bargains at work as well and has a co-worker who regularly disbelieves him when he tells her this is his 50 cent shirt or something like that. The only thing I now buy new are undergarments and socks/stockings. Retail therapy can be great - especially when you can come back with 6 or 7 great new items that totaled less than $20!
