Ok, after just reading through the "Moving to America" thread, which seems to mostly address the now spouse who arrived from abroad, I would love to see a thread about the challenges of adjusting to the person who is adjusting to the US and us!!!! As many of you can probably attest, it can be a bit hard to keep up the sympathetic, caring side after a while, but letting some of our close friends or family know that may not be a good idea-- We just want to vent a bit, but not give damaging impressions of our spouses to those around us. So let's have it out! Come on, if your spouse has been getting on your nerves let's hear about here, in a safe, non-judging forum. It would be nice to hear that others are going thru the same frustrations and ups and downs. Let's share some frustrations and have a few laughs-- some at the crazy things they do and some at ourselves!

Ok here are a few doozies from my husband to start us off----

---After hundreds of dollars spent on driving lessons in his native language, and arranging a test in his language, he failed his first driving test b/c he was so nevous he forgot to turn on the windshield wipers (and it was pouring rain). We had to pay for another test, in another town, and take the time to practice driving in that area.

---In seven months together, we have had a few major holidays and both our birthdays. I understood that he had no money for a present for me, but when he recently went back to his country, it was a bit harder to understand why he needed to buy presents for one person after another, and their children, when he is not working yet and we can't afford it. A discussion on the matter led to a meltdown on his part.

--Once back in his country, and having a great time seeing all his friends and family, he kicked a soccer ball through a karaoke bar window (by accident), costing us $100.

I'm looking forward to reading what you want to unleash :-0 :-)

Food has been my major adjustment. My hubby will say he's not eating something without tasting it. I'm a great cook, and it used to hurt my feelings. He'll have 50 millions questions when I cook something, but go to a restaurant and not a one. I still get frustrated by it sometimes. But either he will eat what I cooked, make a sandwich or something, or buy food. Either way, we both eat.

Soccer lessons? :) Seriously, K., GREAT idea for a thread. I will have to contemplate questions before posing any.

My hubby will say he's not eating something without tasting it.
There's a joke about the widow, crying while sitting on the park bench. A kind stranger comes up and asks what the matter is. The widow says, "My fourth husband just died." The stranger asks whether her first three husbands died, too, and the widow says, "Yes -- they died from eating poisoned mushrooms." The stranger asks, "How did your fourth husband die?" The widow says, "He was strangled and then shot." The stranger says, "That's awful! How could that have happened?" Answer: "He wouldn't eat his mushrooms."

Haha! Great thread, but I don't have anything to add to it yet. Pascal is still in Mali. My parents used to ship me stuff while I was there though and I know that he was freaked out about cream of mushroom soup straight from the can. I think the texture scared him. I can't wait until he sees the other oddities that America has to offer.

However, I want to be as supportive and kind as possible but I know there are going to be times when I'm frustrated. Start this thread again in about 8 months!

K., tell C. that Americanos usually don't leave food in pots on the stove for days & days and continue eating out of the pots. We DO, however (or at least Real Men do), find nothing wrong with eating 3-day-old room-temperature pizza. Fungus is a vegetable, si man. :)

My USC husband had it easy I feel. I take care of paying utility bills/rent in time, groccery shopping on my own, making food, giving him clean shirts to wear and a clean bed to sleep on to.............basically he is very happy to have got a controlling dominating tyrant of a wife, who controls every aspect of what he eats, wears and breathes (yes I also buy his cigarettes):P

ha... you have no idea how badly I need this right now!

love my husband, but bah! (sometimes ;) )

-he too, took a driver's test, and after he failed, and the instructor explained to me everything he did wrong (all very minor things (stingy us laws)), hubby asked me "why didn't you tell me how to say defrost right? or to use my blinker while parallel parking? (ummm because I dont?)

-I have to buy his cigarettes. i loathe it, but he has a hard time with is baby face and foreign passport.

perfect time to quit...

I'm sure I will have more soon. he's been here 3 months now, and we are hitting our stride, and we can laugh more about these things!

hahahhahaha! oh my god, we have a pot of chicken/potato something or other sitting on the stove right now at home...and rice...always rice.

and other food related.

He never ever covers/closes containers /bowls whatever before putting them in the fridge. so in about a day, everything tastes of onions, or whatever it is. And lots of stale moldy food. but hey, at least he cooks, I'll give him that, he cooks a lot.
