Okay, so I'm doing detective work

Is it possible for a person to quit smoking and still on rare occasion have somewhat smoky breath/kisses? Even though the person's clothing and hair have no hint of smoke. Yes, I have ruled out smoking naked in the yard with a shower cap on.

Could it possibly be an after taste from other foods or drinks? Sometimes I think coffee breath is similar. Thoughts?

You still have a lot of tar in the lungs that doesn't go away. May have something to do with that.

Why do detective work? Talk to your partner about your concerns but not in an accusatory way. After all, if you find it unpleasant, that's going to show, no matter how clever about hiding that you think you are.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

As a smoker who has stopped many times and restarted again, I can tell you there are many ways to have a secret smoke and not have the smell on your skin and clothes.

As for the smokey breath being caused by tar in the lungs, that has got to be the best excuse I have heard in a long time. A smoker who does not want to stop will find a way to get his/her fix. You can not get a smoker to stop smoking because you want them to. They will only stop when they want to stop.

Happy detective work. remember you might not like what you find if you dig to deep.

The tar in the lunges thing *could* cause an odor, as it will remain there for some time after they quit... but it's a different smell than the smell you'd have if someone smoked a cigarette. Running or physical activity could cause some extra flavors to show up (especially if they are coughing).

Most likely this person quit smoking, around you, I know a lot of people who quit smoking, but I know even more who hid their smoking habit instead of actually quitting.
