CR-1 holders, upon arriving in US how long did you wait for your SSN# and GC. I get bored staying at home, I want to work but I still don't have my SSN#. I been here at Pennsylvania for 2 weeks already, what I have for now is a welcome notice. Pls let me know how long before you received your SSN# and GC. Thanks

CR-1 will need to go the your nearest SSA office and submit an SS-5 (Application for Social Security Card) - it won't get sent automatically if you don't. The PR/Green Card usually takes a couple/three weeks.

I am fully aware of that.. Answer (above) is correct.

We need not to apply our SSN# personally as CR-1, the government will be the one to give us our security #. It is already included in our application for DS 230.

"Karin and Otto" is correct. You can sit and wait for it to arrive BUT the reality is you should go to your local SS office about 10 days after arrival to see if you are in the system. This applies regardless of whether you checked the appropriate box on the DS230 or not. You may be required to fill in an application or they may be able to give you your SSN then and the card will follow in the mail. Alternatively you can sit and wait for the wheels of bureaucracy to turn. Good luck!

Hello guys, I read from somebody's reply on the other site that you need to bring your GC to SS Office if you are going to check for your SSN#. Is that true? What other documents should I bring in there?

No.

All I brought was my passport with the temporary I-551. I had no other docs such as roof of address. They to a photo copies of my visa, entered whatever info I told them on the computer. That was it. Of course the address I gave them matched what immigration had on file. I got a confirmation letter, quoting my new SNN from my local SSA in TN a couple of days before I got the actual card.

Oh I still don't have my I-551 too, even temporary I-551 I don't have it yet. What I have in here is passport and Visa only.
