My fiance is flying to me with a K-1 on May 23rd. She is going from Manila - Nagoya - Detroit - Texas

She is very nervous and has never left the country before. I tried explaining what to do in the airport. Can anyone give a nice step by step instruction (what she needs, how to get through customs, what they ask)? Also how can she reach me by phone once she leaves Manila? Do the payphones in Nagoya allow you to enter money for international calls? What about the payphones in Detroit? Can she call me?

Many Thanks

Tell her to enroll her celphone to roaming service before leaving and then load it up (at least 1000) so she can call you using her own phone wherever she would have stopovers. I know this is not a step by step advice but I hope this would help even a little. Good luck and happy reunion.

That does help. Can she call me from the USA with it?

yes! tell her to buy smart or globe sim card (i bet she has one already pertaining if she has a cellphone) and tell her 24 hrs before her flight, have it registered to roaming (she can do it by text or go to the nearest cell company if she needs assistance)... it was my first time too, but cellphone helped a lot coz when i landed in HK i texted my family and hubby for my whereabouts and some updates... when i landed in san fran i texted my hubby again that i arrived safely and on time and bought a call card ($5) so i can call him on his phone coz my roaming load is limited. its cheaper to buy call card if its needed once she landed in the US... dont worry she'll be fine... the poe would ok for as long as her docs is complete and a lot of airport officials can assist her all the time

Quick note, no cellphones will work in Japan except for ones made for Japan. So if she has a long layover, she will need to buy a calling card and find a payphone in the airport.

Also they have pay as you go internet computers so she could just get some yen and send you an email letting you know how her trip is going.

monitor the time when she landed on her stopovers...it's easy if you will be the one to call her...

that was weird coz my hubby was able to text me (he had an AT&T roaming) when he landed in narita 3 yrs ago... if my memory serves me right... oh well just to make sure, have her visit to any cellphone company in phil and inquire about this matter, regardless its still easy to buy a call card there if her phone doesnt work in japan

yeah.. tell her to activate her ROAMING service 24 hours before she leaves Manila. GLOBE mobile service is much better than SMART. I met a filipina in Narita Airport and her SMART Roaming Service was bad. She was glad she have her GLOBE Roaming as well.

At NAIA, the first thing she will do is to check-in. Then she will pay for the fees. After she pays her fees, she will go back to the airport employee (at the check-in counter) who will print her boarding pass and baggage. There are a lot of employees at NAIA where she can ask what to do next. Tell her DON'T BE SHY TO ASK ON WHAT TO DO NEXT. It won't hurt to ask.

When she gets to her connecting flights (airport).. THE FIRST THING SHE WOULD DO is find the gate number where she will board. Tell her that she can find the gate number on her boarding pass.

At my state destination the immigration officer did not ask me questions cause he knows my hubby (they work together for DHS). But i read here in VJ that the immigration officers asks the same questions they ask in the interview. Not all though. Then the immigration officer will remind her about the 90 days period to get married.

And she will be greeted, WELCOME TO UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!

Good luck! :star:

Ask her to enroll her mobile to a roaming, go to the payphones area in Detroit airport and text you the no. of the payphone so you can call her on that payphone. Smart roaming wont let you to call, only text. Globe can but it will charge her for the incoming call. She can also make a collect call using payphone to your landline but not to your cellphone. Get some rest now and do some more stretching LOL (kidding).

Does she has a credit card? She just find a payphone that allows credit card charging then make the call.

She can even call you on the plane using the credit card. Though, a little bit pricey but worth it.

lots of filipino fly in and out of country. tell her not to be shy and make friends... most filipinos are very helpful.

just make sure tell her not to give out money to anyone, but generally speaking... if she ask a kababayan... they'll

help her.

This is true. I met 2 Pinays in Japan while we are waiting on our next flight and we all have the same destination (my POE). I am really thankful that I met them because they helped me alot on not to be lost :P Ask her to befriend Pinays too so she can have someone to chitchat with while waiting on her next flight.

Have a safe trip for her :)
