Hello,

I live abroad with my husband, but we are hoping to immigrate late summer. Does anyone know of a good cheap provider of medical insurance that we can pick up while waiting to find jobs and waiting for the jobs insurance to kick in?

Thanks

Laura

I used www.squaremouth.com to get international medical insurance for three months and just recently renewed it for another three. I paid about $150 for each three-month period, and that's with no co-pay on my part. There are a number of different plans to choose from. I went with Atlas, which is affiliated with First Health and Hygeia here.

The words good and cheap don't go together when talking about health insurance. It's one or the other, but not both. Be careful as some plans look very good until you use them.

If at first you don't succeed, then sky diving is not for you.

The two of you are in for some difficulty, because most insurance companies will not accept people until they have lived in the States for one to two years and have established a record with local physicians.

The international plans one person mentioned are usually worthless garbage that wont pay anything.

I'm in Florida and could help you if you were there. One of the companies I deal with (I'm a Life and Health Agent) is called Vista Health Plans, and they take people who just got here. They are an HMO, so one thought is to check out your local HMO companies. Maybe HMO plans are more lenient with immigrants, but I'm not really sure. I can tell you that Aetna will take applications after only six months in the US.

My regular email is carlehrlich@att.net. You can contact me if you want to when you get to the states, and maybe I can help guide you a bit even from a distance.

Yeah, the 'residency' part is the problem. This country is just not setup to accept that people will ever leave and/or move back to the US. I relocated back here from overseas last year and had a lot of the problmes new immigrants have getting insurance before I started to work, getting an apartment, etc.

Google and search specifically for health insurance for new immigrants. Most will be more like emergency plans with higher deductible, but that's really all you need - something to cover you for serious stuff. Don't expect coverage for general day to day GP visits or Rx's to be covered.

It varies by state too, so a forum like this is tough to ask for advice.
