My fiance is in morocco, and I am a US citizen. I just spent the month of april there, and we got engaged there. We are confused about what we should do next. We know a little about the fiance visa, but we were thinking of getting married in morocco, then doing another ceremony in the US. But he was telling me it might take a year for him to get here if we get married first. I am so confused, can any one who has been through this give me some guidance? Thank you in advance!

Sounds like he is pretty familiar with the process. Why do you suppose that is? Are you older than him? Don't care myself, it only seems to be a trend in Moroccan male fiances, though it is totally opposite local custom and tradition.

The K-1 process (fiance) offers little in the way of real advantages, maybe none, but it does get the foriegn person here faster, if his goal is to get to the USA in the quickest route, that is it. If his goal is long term, it won't matter and K-3 or CR-1 may be more advantageous in the long run. It will take 9 months for the fiancee visa, or thereabouts, so is he worried about another 3 months? He is marrying you for life, correct? 3 months is a big problem?

In dealing with Morroco it is best to be very thorough, especially when the circumstances go against local customs and traditions, such things are seen as "red flags" that cause a question of the reasons for the relationship. Read the guides carefully and check the regional forums for people with experience in exactly your type of situation

I am going to say something probably controversial but with good intentions. If you are older than him, especially if you are of an age where you are not likely to have children with him, if you have religious differences, and he knows a lot about this process and he is in a big hurry to get to the USA, and not so big a hurry to marry you, you better be very careful of what you are doing, for your own sake. Morroco is considered a high fraud country and they don't choose those by throwing darts at the map. Please. If I am out of line, so be it. I said nothing to hurt the process and hope gave some good advice.

Good luck

You will find all the answers in the guides. The folks here a VJ have done an outstanding job, and if you take a few hours to study all the info on here I believe it will help you a lot more in making the right decision for your situation.

I was in the same situation as you but I opted for the K-1 for the simple fact that I have been waiting for over a year since we got engaged for some of my own paperwork to be finalized and I wanted to be with my fiancee as soon as possible, even if it meant that she will not be able to work or travel for a few months, but being 5000 miles apart is a hard thing. It is more expensive to go the K-1 route but it is faster. There are peple that have done it in under 6 months and people that have taken a year or better but generally the k-1 will get you guys together sooner. The K-3 takes longer but when he comes over he will have about all the paperwork that he needs in order.

Again, it depends on your particular situation and the guides will be the best help you can get.

Best of luck.

Just thought I would toss in that from my understanding K3 should NOT be considered as a viable option in all but very rare cases.

K-1 is the recommended fiance route, IR1/CR1 is the recommended spousal route.

K3 has all the worst features and none of the benefits of either.

I'm by no means an expert on the subject, I'm really just parroting what I've heard others (particularly pushbrk) state repeatedly in recent months.

Good luck. I think Gary's post here makes a lot of sense - listen to him.

I thank you very much for your advice. First I would like to say, we are both in our 20,s, and looking forward to being married and having children. We don't care much about him coming to the US as much as we want to be together. That is the main point. We would love to get married in morocco, but I am the one not wanting to wait the year to be with him. Being apart is very very hard. We talk everyday, but we just want to be together, above all else. I appreciate your response!!

You cannot count on K1 being faster.

If ANYONE tells you that you can be done in 5-6 months they simply DONT KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT.

You MAY be done with a K1 from start to finish in 6 months. Many people are able to achieve that. Many are not.

We filed our I-129F for K1 visa in Sept 2008. It's now May 2009 and we are not done yet. At this rate if my fiancee can arrive in the US by July, I'll be happy.

And we have not had any RFEs, nothing is wrong with our filing. We simply had 4.5 months at CSC, followed by delay from CSC -> NVC, followed by AP @ NVC, followed by delay NVC -> embassy, followed by yet more delays at the embassy. We are now waiting 6 weeks just to get our interview date at the embassy since returning our Packet 3.

Is our case unusual? Somewhat. Not drastically. There are people waiting even longer than we have been, at every state of the system.

In short - everyone wants to be reunited as quickly as possible. But the system has its own way of grinding you down no matter which visa option you pick, how well prepared you are, and how patient you are. Prepare yourself mentally and emotionally for a long separation. It's the only way to get through it.
