LEXINGTON, KY (AP) - Kentucky police officers will award seat belt wearers with coupons for free food in effort to boost the state's seat belt usage rate.

Drivers and passengers buckled in Monday when they go through the drive-thrus at some McDonald's restaurants in Central and Eastern Kentucky will receive coupons. People not wearing safety belts will be given an educational card instead of citations.

The giveaway is part of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's Office of Highway Safety Click It or Ticket campaign.

The state has a 73 percent seat belt usage rate and is near the bottom nationally when it comes to buckling up, The Lexington Herald-Leader reports.

Why don't they just pass them out to the homeless instead?

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

so u buckle up before u get to the drive thru window and get ur coupons then u unbuckle before u leave the parking lot. yeah, i dont see this being a very good idea.

Well, it's a heck of a lot better an idea than what the Florida legislature has done this session: Make the failure to wear a seat belt a stoppable offense (which up until June 30 it isn't) but let Motorcyclists ride their bikes w/o having to wear a helmet. Now that's stupid. Not surprising for the folks in Tallahassee, though.

They can stop you in Illinois for not wearing a seat belt also. They have for quite a while now.

Do you have to wear a helmet when riding a motorbike in IL?

California does, too.

Noted in Venezuela, practically all the vehicles have privacy windows, have to get those here as well, WI made not wearing a seat belt a secondary offense, but is costing 15 million in federal returned funds until they make it a primary offense, meaning you can be stopped if seen not wearing a belt with up to a 200 buck fine.

I always wear my belt, for one reason, have a box under the passenger front seat spying on me, if I am involved in an accident, my fault or not, will tell the investigators how fast I going, how quickly I responded, and whether or not I was wearing my belt or not. If I were to bypass that box, would really throw the book at me, watch out, big brother is looking.

Windows like that, at least in CA, aren't legal.
