There is plenty of wildlife, but wildlife tends to steer clear of humans, particularly groups of humans. More likely to get zapped by a snake than a mountain lion or bear and a gun is just not useful in those situations.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

My point was that it is not considered a useful tool by the hiking community and as weight is often a primary consideration carrying a gun is more of a nuisance than anything else.

what you don't know, you don't know.

most people who carry wouldn't tell you about it till after they exposed or used it to eliminate a threat. sure, people on this message board know i carry, but people i meet on any given day? most have no idea unless i'm carrying open, which i only do to make a political statemnet.

how much weight are we talking? my favourite concealed carry piece, a remington 51 in 380 auto is about 18 ounces. about half the magazine capacity of a beretta 92, 1/3 the HP per shot of a hot loaded 45, not $hit compared to a S&W66 with 125 JSP, but a hell of a lot better than nasty words and mean faces.

Have you ever drawn your weapon because of a real or perceived threat by another human?

Isn't that a bit pansy for a big man like you? I thought you carried your "belt-fed machine guns" around Schwarzenegger style.

I bet you even say "Ah'll be back"

since entering private life i have drawn exactly twice, that the other party was aware of. didn't have to shoot, either time, but could have, and been justified, once. chose not to.

If you're hiking in the wilderness the only reason you might carry a gun is to defend yourself against dangerous wildlife - mountain lions, bears, wild pigs etc. Unless of course we're running on the idea that Deliverance is actually true - and the countryside is teeming with deformed inbred types that a person must defend themselves against.

Squeal piggy, squeal! Eeeeeeeeeek.

If you "chose not to shoot" then you clearly didn't need to

Unless you went hand-to-hand and were able to subdue the assailant with your Flying Tiger Knee Smash, The Swooping Crane Slap, and the Five-Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique.

the right tool for the right situation.

in winter or fall it's a 1911 type in 45. open carry it's a '92 or a SIG P226, both in 9X19, or a S&W K15-6, all in basketweave "pig rigs". in dress clothes or light summer clothes, the remington comes along.

i have brandished to threats on 2 occasions, both times with good effect. one fellow backpedaled fast. the other dawdled. one guy had a ball bat, and the other guy had a tire iron. the first after a pro baseball game in a parking lot. the second at a rest stop on I-81. neither were drunk or drugged. they both just wanted "stuff", and were willing to hurt someone to get it.

could have shot the second one in front of witnesses who would have testified to his continued threat after display and warning. in neither case was i in an area that should be considered high risk, or at a time that should be considered high risk. i don't generally go to the wrong kind of places at the wrong time. still, $hit happens.

on one other occasion i was sitting in a remote county park late in an evening with a woman. some "urban yutes" came strolling by talking big, but didn't notice us in the shadow. they never saw what was in my hand, or in hers...
