SSN question

When exactly do they process the SSN? Is it when you're approved at the interview or when you activate the CR1/IR1? I ask because we've decided to stay a month longer (after the interview) in Canada but I'd really like to get the process started for his SSN before we get to the U.S. I know that almost everyone has to go to the gov't office in person since they rarely actually mail you the card, but should we activate his visa a month before leaving so as to at least put the process in motion? Thanks.

The ball doesnt start rolling till you hand the evelope over at POE when you activate the visa!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

So is it bad to drive to the border, activate the visa, and stay in Canada for another month before actually moving to the U.S.?

As far as the SSN the only problem I can see is will there be someone at the address if the SSN is assigned and card is mailed, otherwise it will be sent back and you will then need to apply for a replacement card.

Yes, good point. Hmmm, I hope they'll still let her have the mail. Oh wait, I'll just make out the envelope in my name and c/o my mom.

Here's another question - since I'll be paying the postage and buying the envelope so they can mail the visa to us, what exactly do I buy? Can I buy any form of shipment (i.e. regular mail, certified, etc)?
