I'm going to be Adjusting status in NYC, where apparently the wait is over 2 years. I'm wondering if by the end of that time period you just get your 10 year card, or if you get the 2 year and then have to renew.

Also, does the time you wait to adjust status count toward citizenship?

fiance would like to do his grad work in Europe, which might be a problem before becoming a citizen...

If, on the day you are interviewed and/or your application to adjust status is approved, you have been married for two years or longer you should receive a ten year card. If, on the day you are interviewed and/or your application to adjust status is approved, you have been married for less than two years, you will receive a two year conditional card. Our application was approved 3 weeks before our 2nd anniversary- we got a 2 year conditional card.

No, the time waiting to adjust status does not count towards citizenship - only the time after your AOS has been approved counts.

Good news - the waiting time got lately much shorter in NYC, it just don't show in the USCIS statistics.

So there probably will be no problem. Interview could be in 6 months and then another 3 years waiting for citizenship.
