You'll make it. Don't stress.

On my 2nd trip over I was working in Reno and scheduled to fly from Reno to SFO in the evening to get the same flight you are on. I get a call mid afternoon from United saying that my flight was cancelled and they couldn't get me there until the next day. But I could call Southwest. :ranting: No go there. So I DROVE from Reno to SFO. Huge rains in SFO, so the highway (Jim help me here, the main one coming from the Bay Bridge through the city to the airport) was flooded so only one lane getting through. Took forever.

I made it. Beat the h3ll out of the rental to get there, but I made it. So think positively. And enjoy the pizza.

Huge rains in SFO, so the highway (Jim help me here, the main one coming from the Bay Bridge through the city to the airport) was flooded so only one lane getting through. Took forever.

That would depend on where the flooded lanes were. The Bay Bridge is I-80. That merges into SR-101 in downtown San Francisco, which goes south to the airport. If the flooding was on the Oakland side of the bridge, there are three freeways that converge just before the bridge - I-80 from the north, I-580 from the east, and I-880 from the south.

The downtown area where the I-80 and SR-101 converge is often hit by flooding during heavy rains. They've been working for years to convert that stretch of road from 1950's style urban highway into a modern elevated freeway to reduce congestion.

Fortunately, I don't have to go anywhere near the actual city of San Francisco. The airport is well south, near San Mateo. I take the San Mateo bridge across the bay.

Wow! You drove all the way from Reno to catch a flight at SFO! Now THAT'S dedication! I think I'd do the same for Phuong, but I'm hoping that won't have to be tested.

Sadly, no pizza 'n beer last night. :crying:

Todd's flight was delayed by two hours because of aircraft problems. Kevin couldn't get his boarding passes until late because the checkin counter for his international carrier wasn't open yet, and he had to wait at the airport.

So, in the future...

Any VJ members passing through SFO on the way to Vietnam - if you've got a sufficiently long layover in San Francisco, and you'd like to spend an hour or two in a comfortable restaurant with some good food sharing pictures and stories about VN and your journey, feel free to shoot me a PM or post in this thread. It beats spending those two hours on a hard plastic chair at the gate for your flight. :)

What's the restaurant name? I live in the bay area. I've been here 8 years, but unfortunately I don't get out much. It'd be nice to have a restaurant to go to.

Actually, there's quite a few good restaurants within ten or fifteen minutes of the airport. I was going to take Todd and Kevin to BJ's Pizzeria and Brewery in San Mateo. It's at Bridgepointe Plaza.

Jim, I appreciate your efforts! Sorry about the equipment problems but when the captain asked if we wanted to go without radar we kind of chose to wait for a new plane :)

No problems! I would have made the same decision. Once you get about 2/3 of the way across the country there's some big stuff you could run into without radar, like the Rocky mountains! :D

Well folks, thanks for all the great advice and help here but I guess I won't be Kevin&Thao. I'll leave my screen name as is so I can keep up with the latest and see how everyone is getting along. Things didn't go well in Vung Tau so I won't be needing any more assistance I guess. I'm sure sorry we didn't get to meet up in SFO and unfortunately I don't think there will be a second chance, but who knows I guess.

Aw man, that really sucks! :crying:

I'm not going to ask you to give any details because I know this is personal, but I presume that your relationship didn't come together the way you'd hoped. Sometimes this is how it happens. Things are different in the real world vs. the virtual world. I sincerely hope that things improve for you soon, and if you ever feel like talking about it we're here. You've also got my email address, so feel free to write.

Kind regards,

Jim
