I wonder what matters most these parents: to be righteous about their belief in natural medicine, or to save their child's life. Never mind, already answered.

They actually allowed the boy one session of chemo, but changed their minds after the boy became depressed from the therapy. Hopefully, they'll come around to seeing that the chemo is going to save his life, even if it makes him very ill in the process. :( Sad situation all around.

There are more parents that refuse medical intervention without shamanism as the reason.

Public health officials are adamant that there’s no solid evidence linking vaccines to autism or other neurological disorders. But that’s apparently not enough to persuade growing numbers of parents who are refusing to vaccinate their children because they believe vaccines may cause health problems, the NY Times reports.

States require school children to be vaccinated, but allow exemptions for families whose religious beliefs prohibit vaccination. Some 20 states also allow exemptions for parents whose “personal beliefs” prompt them to skip vaccination for their children. In 2004, 2.5% of children in those states were unvaccinated because of persomal belief exemptions, up from less than 1% in 1991, according to the article.

Last month in San Diego, 12 kids fell ill with the measles, a childhood disease made rare in this country by vaccination. Nine of the kids had skipped vaccination because their parents objected; the other three were too young to receive the vaccine. Most children recover from measles without lasting problems, but the disease causes death in one or two out of every 1,000 cases, and serious complications such as retardation in others, according to the CDC.

“The very success of immunizations has turned out to be an Achilles’ heel,” Mark Sawyer, a pediatrician and infectious disease specialist at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego, told the NYT. “Most of these parents have never seen measles, and don’t realize it could be a bad disease so they turn their concerns to unfounded risks. They do not perceive risk of the disease but perceive risk of the vaccine.”

I believe it is their right, within reason, and depending on the gravity of the situation.

My question was answered by them already bro; I was being ironic. they self-righteousness matters waaaaaaaaaaaay more to them than their kid's life. Sad indeed.

If they are Catholic as indicated in the article, there is nothing in that religion that supports their position. IMO, I think they are just looking for an excuse...perhaps they don't trust doctors in general and they don't want to see their boy suffer...which I know is irrational, but sometimes parents let their emotions get in the way of doing the right thing.
