we bought a weeping cheery tree voer the week-end and a honeysuckle..

I wish I was less lazy and got the net out of the attic to cover our cherry tree. The birds ate all the cherries :(

We have fuji apple tree, golden delicious, red delicious, and granny smith. We also have peaches, plums, pears, figs and some other stuff. The plum tree and he fuji apple tree are both dwarf trees.

Life is a ticket to the greatest show on earth.

I took a few pics a week or two ago and just got around to getting them off my camera.

Here is one how I typically started most of my plants from seeds.

At first I bought some "peat-pots", they worked fine but any small cup worked as well and were free.

As my soil is not good quality, I have been growing almost everything in any type of container I can find.

P5170064.jpg

Here are two 4x10 boxes I made, I have two other ones as well.

Things have grow quite a bit since these pics were taken, we have already gotten Cucumbers (and a ton on the way).

I noticed a few people offering "free manure" on Craigslist, I may get some this week.

One thing that seems a little odd are my Tomato plants are like 5' tall and thriving, flowers have come and gone and I don't have one tomato yet.

Anyone ever heard of Tomato plants that never produced tomatoes?

This year I decided to start some of my garden from seed instead of buying plants. I forgot to label my peppers so don't know which ones are red pepper, habanaro, banana, or chili. All the brocolli and cabbage started fine. I have basil, mint, and cilantro for herbs. 3 rows of beans, green and wax. 1 row of onions, 1 row of carrots, 1 row of leaf lettuce, and a couple tomato plants. I started out gardening a few years ago with just beans and a few tomato plants for canning. This year I had to till up more lawn to fit everything.

Last year, raspberry canes started to pop up (birds) so I left them. This year they produced.

I also have morning glorys, clematis, tulips, wild roses, and sunflowers.

Rabbits and squirrels can be taken out with CB Caps.

Rabbits are eating our favorite scrubs and the squirrels love eating the woodwork trim on my home, but been switching that to plastic. AC quit working in my Caddy, got under, two wires, a black and a green running in parallel was the problem, the black one was okay, the green one was chewed in half. Same problem in hanging green wire Christmas tree lamps or extension cords, green is always chewed in half, they don't touch the white colored ones.

Wife discovered a bush in our yard, she is still learning and finding new things to her, even after five years. That has a three pointed leaf, red berries, and small white flowers surrounding white seed like buds. What kind is it, she asked, would like to plant more. Beats the heck out of me, did waste an hour on the net, saw a zillion bushes, but none like that. All I know, it's prolific, was hit by lightning break off the top main trunk a few years back, looked like hell, but new branches grew out of the stub and is large and beautiful again. And the rabbits won't touch it.

I am amazed with the memory botanists have for stuff like this, have to find one. Her latest kick is hostas', an amazing plant for the northern climate, nothing left of it in the fall, bare ground, but always grows back. Can separate the roots, not even carefully, plant those, and they repopulate.

Was thinking about building a greenhouse to grow grass.

i used to farm the front 40, btu gave it up when i began to travel extensively. had several acres in indian corn and sunflower mixed. quite lovely from the roadside, as the flower heads faced south towards it. both seeds can be mixed in a mechanised corn planter. did it with a ford utility tractor (600 series) that is older than me and period equipment in 2 row size i bought from a neighbor. the sheep enjoyed it all winter long. would always keep bushels of corn and sunflower heads to fatten them in the barn before slaughter (nov-jan). made for the best lamb i've ever had.

also kept a kitchen garden about 50' X 50', with sweet corn and squash mixed in rows of hills (squash can't stand the sun and the leaves shade the weeds), then pole beans, then tomatoes, then peppers, from north to south. this year it's just some tomatoes and peppers.

CB caps are low powered .22 ammo. It comes in short, long, and long rifle. Out of a rifle it can hardly be heard. AKA City Bullets.

+1 on the cb caps. they are "22 super short" that can be fired in any 22 lr rifle. they are accurate enough to 20 yards and are very quiet. i prefer a custom autorifle i built in 9mm with 147 gr subsonics at about 900 fps. very quiet and good to 75 yards on groundhogs with body shots. OK on rabbits with body shots out to about 50 yards. working now on a similar custom gun in 7.62X25 based on a pps43/52 and tec9 hybridisation that will get subsonics as an option. also have some scoped 22 lr i can take rabbits with head shots out to about 50 yards reliably. same with squirrels. mostly i just ignore them all.

word of advise: don't eat summertime rabbit unless you are familiar with tularemia and know what to look for in the viscera. wait till 2-3 weeks after the first frost for ol' peter.

avoid the chicken and hog manure like the plague. it is too strong (nitrates) and will burn your plants. you want sheep or horse manure. horse is lots of volume and low nitrates, but seedy. sheep is better if from a stall that has been strawed correctly (no weed seeds). the straw keeps moisture in the garden if you turn the manure under.
