Protestors Anybody?

The violent protests of people in different city localities, against prolonged power failures have made no difference on the performance of the Karachi Electric Supply Corporation (KESC), as people continue to suffer on the seventh consecutive day of the prevailing power crisis.

As the cable faults and feeder trippings continue in the metropolis, the power utility also carried out load-shedding in different city areas during the day and in the evening for a total duration of about three hours. The work to rejoin 132 KV Extra High Tension (EHT) Line carrying electricity from Civil Aviation-Landhi Circuit could not be completed till evening, causing system overloading, which led to more breakdowns.

On Wednesday, people in different localities attacked and ransacked KESC complaint centres and in Gulistan-e-Jauhar locality, enraged protestors torched the area complaint centre. The KESC spokesman said that those complaint centres, which were damaged by angry protestors, were made operational on Wednesday night.

Many vehicles of the KESC were damaged by angry protestors and one of the vehicles was torched in Lasbela area. Also, in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Pak Colony localities, angry residents took to streets and blocked the main roads for vehicular traffic. They pelted stones on moving vehicles and burnt tyres on roads. The KESC staff responsible for repairing of faults was working under police protection in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Nazimabad, Liaquatabad and other affected areas.

Even though, the KESC failed to maintain uninterrupted power supply in the metropolis, residents said that the intensity of power breakdowns were relatively less compared to those experienced during the last four days.

However, reports of long duration of power cuts were received from Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Pak Colony, Metroville III, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Malir, Landhi, Khokhrapar, Model Colony, Airport, Liaquatabad, Gulbahar, Nazimabad, Federal B Area, Lyari, II Chundrigar Road, Old City Areas, Garden, Defence, Gizri and other localities.

A resident of Federal B Area Block 9 said that his area experienced two power breakdowns for a total duration of three hours. He said that though problem was still unresolved, the situation was much better as compared to Tuesday, when his locality remained without power for a total of 14 hours.

Criticising the management of the KESC, a resident of Gulshan-e-Iqbal said in the current hot weather his entire locality experienced two power breakdowns for three hours each.

An irate resident of Liaquatabad area said that KESC authorities deliberately shut their electricity in order to maintain uninterrupted power supply to affluent localities.

However, a spokesman for the KESC said that in the morning, the power utility faced acute shortage of 100 megawatts electricity and it carried out group-wise load-shedding to meet the demand. Again, he said, during evening peak hours, the cityís power demand touched 2250 megawatts against the supply of 2100 mw electricity. The KESC had no other option but to carryout load-shedding for one-and-half hour to meet the shortage of 150 MW.

Regarding work to rejoin EHT line at Civil Aviation-Landhi Circuit, he hoped that the work would be completed late in the night and after its completion, the system overloading could be minimised. He said that work to repair cable faults in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Gulistan-e-Jauhar areas was going on and it would be completed in the night.

He said that KESC was facing difficulties in attending peopleís complaints due to the fact that angry protestors had damaged many complaint centres.

However, till our filing of this report, angry people in Lasbela area took to streets, pelted moving vehicles with stones, burnt tyres on roads, damaged traffic signals and raised slogans against the management of the KESC for failing to provide electricity in their locality.

The vehicular traffic on Nishtar Road and Nawab Siddique Ali Khan Road was also blocked due to the violence in Lasbela. Police and Rangers reached the scene and tried to calm down the angry protestors.

The KESC staff responsible for repairing of faults was working under police protection in Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Nazimabad, Liaquatabad and other affected areas.

Typical of the sub-continent... we had an 18 hour power cut on Sunday (I think) and another on Monday - for about 12 hours. Daily power cuts of a couple of hours at a stretch are the norm... the area I live in New bloody Delhi is a fairly affluent area... but only the government and the diplomatic areas have next to no power cuts... or the extremely affluent areas... the poorer parts of New bloody Delhi have virtually no leccy to speak of - 14-15 hours a day... just goes to show what a frigging economic giant this place is!!!

In fact since they privatised things in New bloody Delhi things have got worse for the part of Delhi dealt with by the Bimbani's (Ambani borthers and their bollywood #######)... we have had 9 hour power cuts every day for a period of 1 year... but the part dealt with by the tatas ha go better... we had our home catch fire twice after the Bimbani's took over... was informed by their frigging company that they are not obliged to provide leccy at any given voltage that it can be increased as and when they choose... what I said to the person who said that to me is simply not repeatable... suffice to say I completely emasculated him.

Paul and I met on the Bazaar on the 14th January (he joined my progressive rock forum that day)

July 3rd he flew to England to meet me

We fell in love while he drove all over the place coz I cannot read maps (we were supposed to go to Ingleton - but touched Darlington 4 times, Pierce Bridge 6 times, Scotch Corner twice and Bernard Castle twice and we never did make it to Ingleton)

It has been so long and so much has happened in between...

Arrived in Houston on October 29th 2006

Married 17th November 2006

Lost my father 8th January 2007 (all dates are a blur after this)

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."
