:), a typo is only a typo if it passes your typo test? The fact that the difference between the real number and the accidental number has absolutely no relevance to the legitimacy or otherwise of your 'pronouncement' regarding current knowledge of what went on back in the day seems to escape your notice entirely. Dear oh dear.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

hehehehehe let's stop it with the bickering!

The find is astonishing because it predates other fertility goddess sculptures by about 5,000 years. Yes, fat women - especially in survival cultures - were viewed as desirable and healthy. A woman carrying extra weight was better able to carry and nourish a child, thus ensuring the survival of the family/band/tribe. A woman who put on weight easily survived when there was little food because her genetic make up was 'thrifty' (hence, the preponderence of Type 2 diabetes in our well-stocked consumer society today). Also, in Inuit culture a woman with extra weight was desirable because her weight was good evidence of her husband's hunting prowress which mean that he was successful and earned the respect of the tribe/band members. I am sure that situation is also one probably shared by other primitive survival societies.

Thanks for the article - it was fascinating.

So in other words - these ancient societies operated under the principle of "the thicker the cushion, the better the pushin"

How do you lose credibility for a typo. Even if it isn't a typo, it doesn't change the point that was made - that we don't know much about human civilization that far back.

Presumably you do so perhaps you'd mind sharing the source of this knowledge.

Yeah, since we have no certainty on prehistory we so should ignore all archaeologist and paleologists with their theories.

You're assuming there's no way to know as to their preferences but we have some clues. There's more are figurines than that one and even in an exaggerated form it does suggest an ideal even for fertility goddess. The human body hasn't changed dramatically in 35,000 years but the lifespan was shorter and it should be noted that age of menarche has decline with better diets; therefore, our ancestors needed to consume more as hunter gatherers in order to maintain the weight to bear children.

Read Desmond Morris if you're interested and no he wasn't a caveman either.

Better put and explains why modern diets don't work against countless generations of females who survived long enough to pass on their genes. In addition, due to more fat content, women tend to survive longer than men in famines.
