Hi everyone,

I am new to the boards. My UK husband and I just got married and are now looking to complete DCF here in London. I have a few questions regarding the process and hope you can help.

Before we file, should I change my surname or keep my maiden name until after all the filing has all gone through? I plan on changing it anyway, but wondered if it would confuse matters more if I did change it. I heard that it might not be a good idea to change it because all my documents are in my maiden name.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the quick reply! Did you change your passport before your filed? I was hoing to make all the changes after filing, because I want to get going with it asap.

I changed it before we filed. All you have to do is make copies of your photo page, entry stamp and residency permit to send with the application and then you can send your passport to be changed. You will not be needing it for a while.

The only question I have about this, is I might be going to America in a few months and don't want to have sent my passport away just in case its not back in time. Do you know if we can still file with my maiden name? Or will they not allow that?

I am sure that they will understand the name being different. I do not think that it is an issue. But maybe someone else on here has an idea if they require the married name on the application. Sorry

We filed (I'm the female USC) with me using his last name, even though 1) everything of mine was in another name (I had my ex-husband's still) and 2) I ended up never legally changing my last name to my husband's, and now use a different last name completely. No problems in going through DCF or even over here in the US, when I filed the I-865 with my new last name.

Hmmmm, maybe that was confusing -- maybe best explained like this:

1) Filed for and successfully obtained CR1 visa as Mr. John and Mrs. Mary Smith (though I was legally Ms. Mary Jones)

2) Never changed name legally to Mary Smith; instead changed to Ms. Mary Jones-Smith

3) Filed I-865 when we moved house within the US as Ms. Mary Jones-Smith who was the sponsor of Mr. John Smith

4) No problems!!!

Do whatever works for you and your timeframe with needing to go back to the US. You are not legally obligated to change your name on your US passport just to go through this process; heck, mine still has my old name on it. I just match the ticket to the name on the passport. If it were me and I knew I needed to travel within a set period of time, I would wait.
