Aw $hit.

I read the original article wrong. I thought it was about business owners catering to one group. :P

We all make mistakes. The big people own up to them. :D

*Big is not being used in a bigoted way in this post*

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

And for the record, this isn't about people making covert choices based on race. This is a very public choice to discriminate against a group. Yet somehow this is considered okay, whereas it would be a disaster if the situation were reversed.

Why do some business owners put the Christian 'fish symbol' on their business cards? Or when Focus on the Family tells Christians to boycott Ford Motor Company for advertising in a gay magazine? Things like this go on all the time. I know that Filipinos will tend to patronize businesses that they know are run by other Filipinos. Drive over to Korea Town, or Little Tokyo, Little Saigon, Chinatown.

You make a good point, about the Fish symbol but as for the boycott concept, that gets into a completely different area.

If you had a family member who had a business, why wouldn't you patronize it when you could?

If you went to Temple, why not "give your business" to a member of your congregation?

If you are an immigrant here and you knew of someone from your country who is a small business owner , you might be inclined to bring your purchasing dollars there as well.

Perhaps it's normal to feel "kinship" with others due to... family, faith, nationality and maybe even race.

I don't see anything evil about it, I think I do it a little myself, as someone who is trying to keep my business alive, I often seek out other small businesses which might be struggling.

There are so many white owned businesses it would never occur to me to use this as a factor, if I were a minority .. maybe I would.... but I would not accept substandard goods or service because I feel a greater kinship to:

honesty, integrity, dependable service and good price than I do Race :)

A number of people pointed out that this story was about one lady or family deciding to do this on their own, in fact they are working to build a movement and have had some success at doing so.

<<<Plans are under way to track spending among supporters nationwide and build a national database of quality black businesses. The first affiliate chapter has been launched in Atlanta, and the couple has established a foundation to raise funds for black businesses and an annual convention.

"We have the real power to do something, to use the money we spend every day to solve our problems," Maggie Anderson said recently at a meet-and-greet in Atlanta. "We have to believe that black businesses are just as good as everybody else's."

Now, the Andersons are following up with 4,000 people who signed up for the experiment on their Web site to gauge their commitment and set up online accounts to track their spending. Hundreds have also joined the experiment's Facebook page, Maggie Anderson said.>>>

Seems IIRC, Obamas former church had some "list" in which (among other things) members agreed to do business with Blacks first. I read it right off their website way back when.

Since the lady in the story is from Chicago, it's possible Rev Wright is her Paster too.
