I'm sure that's true of some teachers - overworked, underpaid, having to comply with regular performance check ups by government auditors - a lot of them are probably exhausted at having to deal with petty fights on top of everything else they have to deal with.

Bullying it is an issue that is taken very seriously, most schools have some sort of outreach program or counselling facility to deal with it and there are national organisations trying to combat it, which have a presence in schools.

Do you think getting bullied in my past has anything to do with Darth Vader becoming my childhood hero?

In general, I think teachers would prefer to defuse issues before they turn into bullying. I think that's the reasoning behind what they're doing in Alameda.

If they actually deal with the issues, then I'm all for it. I had to use violence.

Put it this way it can't hurt. If bullying is about messing with those weaker than you or who are perceived to be "different" (substandard) in some way, then encouraging open-mindedness is surely a positive thing.

Its not a magic solution by any means, but its not pretending to be either.

Your teachers not helping you in your situation does not make this a bad idea.

Schools have to take a stand on bullying and they do. As to how effective the measures are, of course they are not going to be 100% effective, but can you imagine a school where such things were entirely ignored?

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

I find it amazing that some folks can't understand that bullying is a real and pervasive problem in schools (always has-been) and that addressing some of the underlying issues that cause kids to see others as "different" or "deficient" can only be a good thing.

I was bullied from 1st to 12th grade. Most of it was psychological, but a lot of it was also physical. The teachers did nothing to help and talking to the bullies just made them attack more, so I eventually responded by kicking their a$$.

Some people may say that violence solves nothing, well... they're wrong. In this case, it was the only language they understood. So once I caused a few bloody noses (and other assorted injuries), they left me alone. Oddly enough, doing all of that earned their respect and I was left alone.

Bottom line: junior high and high school sucks.

Most teachers i've known don't really want to deal with it at all.

Well, from the standpoint of a student, all those organizations don't mean much. They will not use them unless their parents make them. I've been a teacher and i've seen it all too often.

I didn't mean to imply that the teachers are indifferent about violence. Yes, they are underpaid and overworked.

There's some very strange pathos at work there I'm sure.

I never said it was a "bad idea."

If teachers take a proactive approach and actually help their students, then I'm all for it. However, it's been my experience that teachers generally wish to stay out of student fighting, if for no other reason, they don't wish to get yelled at by parents and the school administration.

The point is that options are available.

Suicide is an issue in high-school and college, but you can't very well say that all of the poster ads for the Samaritans are worthless.

The student does have *some* responsibility for managing problem situations that they are faced with. That's part of what life is.

Teachers can only do so much.

I think its a good idea even if the teacher's aren't proactive about it.

Well, I don't really give a $hit. I just think it's a waste of time and resource to teach this at such a young age. Plus, I dislike how society won't let kids be kids. When I was a kid, all I cared about was doing my homework, Transformers, ThunderCats and He-Man.

Maybe that's why you were bullied? :jest:
